TheinorganictheorythathydrocarbonscomefromdeepintheEarth,frommaterialsthatwereincorporatedastheEarthwasformedwasdevisedearlyinthe1900s,whenscientistscametobelievethatpetroleumwasaresidueleftfromtheformationoftheSolarSystemor,asaresultofchemicalactionsdeepwithintheEarth.DimitriMendeleev,thedistinguishedRussianchemistwhodiscoveredtheperiodicnatureoftheelements,believedthatpetroleumemanatedfromdeepwithintheEarth,frominorganicoriginsratherthanfromorganicsediments.Hisviewwasthatoccurrencesofpetroleumseemedtobecontrolledmorebythelargescalefeaturesofthecrust,likethemountainrangesandthegreatvalleys,thanbythedetailsofsedimentarydepositslaiddownovertheyears.Sincethen,otherscientistshaveadoptedthesameview.Today,theseproponentsoftheinorganictheoryclaimthatdataacquiredbymoderntechnologyhasstrengthenedtheirclaimswhileatthesametimeweakeningthecaseforapurelybiologicaloriginofhydrocarbons.
