Anewstudyinvestigatedwhatgroupsizepeopleactuallylookforandencounterineverydaylife.Thescientistsaskedmorethan4.000peoplefromtheU.S.andtheNetherlandstoreportthesizeoftheirsocialgroupsforawidevarietyofactivities.Foreightdifferentactivities(goingtoabar,chattingatwork,chattingoffwork,havingdinner,goingonaholiday,goingtoamovietheatre,workingonaproject,playingsports),peoplereportedagroupsizeoftwomoreoftenthantheyreportedlargergroupsizes.Interestingly,forabouthalfoftheseactivities,womenreportedagroupsizeoftwosignificantlymoreoftenthanmendid,suggestingthatwomenpreferasocialgroupsizeoftwoevenmorethanmendo.
Theresearchersalsousedaresearchtechniquecalledrealtimeexperiencesamplinginthesecondpartofthestudy.274volunteerswereaskedseventimesadaytoreportthelastsocialsituationtheyhadexperienced.Theresultswereclear.Twowasthemostcommongroupsizewith52.6percent.Thus,thispartofthestudyalsosuggestedthattwoisthemostcommongroupsizeinsocialinteractions.
