NelsonRolihlahlaMandelawasborninTranskei,SouthAfricaonJuly18,1918.HisfatherwasChiefHenryMandelaoftheTembuTribe.MandelahimselfwaseducatedatUniversityCollegeofFortHareandtheUniversityofWitwatersrandandqualifiedinlawin1942.HejoinedtheAfricanNationalCongressin1944andwasengagedinresistanceagainsttherulingNationalParty'
sapartheidpoliciesafter1948.Hewentontrialfortreasonin1956-1961andwasaquittedin1961.
AfterthebanningoftheANCin1960,NelsonMandelaarguedforthesettingupofamilitarywingwithintheANC.InJune1961,theANCexecutiveconsideredhisproposalontheuseofviolenttacticsandagreedthatthosememberswhowishedtoinvolvethemselvesinMandela'
scampaignwouldnotbestoppedfromdoingsobytheANC.ThisledtotheformationofUmkhontoweSizwe.Mandelawasarrestedin1962andsentencedtofiveyears'
imprisonmentwithhardlabour.In1963,whenmanyfellowleadersoftheANCandtheUmkhontoweSizwewerearrested,Mandelawasbroughttostandtrialwiththemforplottingtooverthrowthegovernmentbyviolence.Hisstatementfromthedockreceivedconsiderableinternationalpublicity.OnJune12,1964,eightoftheaccused,includingMandela,weresentencedtolifeimprisonment.From1964to1982,hewasincarceratedatRobbenIslandPrison,offCapeTown;
thereafter,hewasatPollsmoorPrison,nearbyonthemainland.
Duringhisyearsinprison,NelsonMandela'
sreputationgrewsteadily.HewaswidelyacceptedasthemostsignificantblackleaderinSouthAfricaandbecameapotentsymbolofresistanceastheanti-apartheidmovementgatheredstrength.Heconsistentlyrefusedtocompromisehispoliticalpositiontoobtainhisfreedom.
NelsonMandelawasreleasedonFebruary18,1990.Afterhisrelease,heplungedhimselfwholeheartedlyintohislife'
swork,strivingtoattainthegoalsheandothershadsetoutalmostfourdecadesearlier.In1991,atthefirstnationalconferenceoftheANCheldinsideSouthAfricaaftertheorganizationhadbeenbannedin1960,MandelawaselectedPresidentoftheANCwhilehislifelongfriendandcolleague,OliverTambo,becametheorganisation'
sNationalChairperson.
