Ikeeptouchingmynose.That’swheretheyputtherecorder.Ican’tfeelitinmynose,butit’sthere.ItwillrecordallmywordswhenIspeak,andanyothersoundswhicharenearme.Therecorderwillgoonworkingforoneyear.

Music,talking,laughing,dancing.Iseverybodyhappy?

Theanswerisno.everybodyhastheirYearofsharingwhentheyaretwelve,andhalfofthemdon’tcomeback.Theydie.Thisisagoodbyeparty.

PerhapsyouthinkI’mafraid.Well,I’mnot.I’mtheonlypersonherewhohasnofriendsandfamilyattheparty.Ididn’taskanyfriendstocome.Mymother’stoobusy(asusual).Ispeciallyaskedmyfathernottocome–hewouldcry.Idon’twantpeopletoseehimcrying.

I’mgoingoutside.Idon’twanttotalktoanybody.

Ican’tcountallthebicyclesbythewallhere–halfthevillageisatthisparty!

Ididn’tbringmybicyclebecauseI’mnotgoinghomeaftertheparty.

Iwouldreallylikeacar,notabicycle,becauseIlovetogofast.I’veseencarsinoldfilms,buttherearenocarsintheworldnow–nocars,noroads,nofactories,nobigtowns,justlittlevillageslikethisone.Intheolddays,theysay,theworldwasabadanddirtyplaceandanimalsweredyingbecauseofallthosecarsandfactories.Wasthatreallytrue?

Nowtheworldisveryboring.Welivequietlyinourvillages,wedon’teatmeat,andwemakeeverythingourselveswithourhands.

I’msittingoutsidealone.I’vealwaysbeenaloneandthat’sOK.I’mclever,fastandstrongandI’mnotgoingtodieinthisYearofSharing.I’vealwaysbeenbestateverythinginthevillageschool.NowI’mgoingtobebestamongtheanimals.Here’sthedoctor.

‘Doctor,Idon’twantastupidanimallikeacoworasheep.Iwantsomethingbig,strongandfast,ananimalwhichisnotafraid.Acleveranimallikeme.’

Intheolddayspeoplewereeverywhereintheworld.Millionsofthem.Theywerefreetogowheretheywantedandtodowhattheywanted.Nowtherearewallsroundourvillagesandwecan’tgoout,andonlyanimalsarefree.

OneofthedeerislookingatmebecauseI’mmoving.I’mtryingtostandupbutitisdifficult.Mybodyiscold;

I’veneverbeensocoldinmylife.Iwaslyingonthewetgroundandofcoursetheydidn’tgivemeanyclothestowear.IhavetomoveveryslowlyuntilIgetwarm.

Therearethreedeer–no,four.Ididn’tseethefourthatfirstbecauseit’sverysmall.Ithinkit’sababy.It’slyingbesidethedeerwhichislookingatme–Ithinkthat’sitsmother.

Themotheriswatchingmecarefully---shethinksI’mherbabytoo.Poormother!

I’mastrangebabyforhertohave.There’sanotherdeerwhichlooksyoung–perhapsoneyearold.Thelastdeerisbiggest–Ithinkhe’sthefatherofthetwoyoungdeer.

There’smorelightnow.thedeeraremovingaround,takingleavesfromthetreesandeatingthem.I’mhungrytoo.Iwantmybreakfast.

WhenMotheraskedme,‘Whereareyou?
