That’swhytheUKgovernmentlaunchedits“e-petition”siteinNovember2006.Insteadofphysicallycollectingsignatures,allanyonewithanideahastodonowistomakeaproposalonthegovernmentwebsite,andanyonewhosupportstheideaisfreetoaddhisorhersignature.

Thepetitionssoonstartedtoflowin.TheideawasfortheBritishpeopletoexpresstheirconstructiveideas.Manychoseinsteadtoexpresstheirsenseofhumor.

OnepetitionercalledonTonyBlairtostoptheDeputyPrimeMinistereatingsomuch.Anotherwantedtoexpel(驱逐)ScotlandfromtheUnitedKingdombecauseScottishfootballfansneversupportEnglandintheWorldCup.

OtherpetitionerscalledonthePrimeMinistertoabolishthemonarchy.Somewantedtogiveitmorepower.SomewantedtoopposetheUnitedStates.OtherswantedtoleavetheEuropeanUnion.SomewantedtosendmoretroopstoIraqandotherswantedthemallbroughthome.SomewantedtoadopttheEuro(欧元).Otherswantedtokeepthepound.

Yetifsomepetitionsarenotserious.Otherspresentadirectchallengetogovernmentpolicy.Apetitioncallingonthegovernmenttodropplanstochargedriversforusingroadshasalreadydrawnaround1.8millionsignatures.Inresponsetothat,arivalpetitionhasbeenpostedinsupportofroadpricing.Andthatisalsorapidlygrowing.
