WhenVirginiadecidedtosetupastateuniversityin1818,theretiredU.S.Presidentfinallywasabletodevotehistalent,time,andenergytocreatingthisnewkindofeducationalinstitution.Bythetimehewasfinishedwithhisdesign,JeffersonhadinventedanentirelynewAmericansettingforhighereducation:

theUniversityofVirginia,inCharlottesville,VA,farawayfromthecitycenter.Heintendedthisspottopromotelearningbecauseitwasnaturalandunspoiled,andfarfromanythingthatcoulddistractorharmthestudents.TheUniversityconsistsoftworowsofhouses,fiveoneachside,leadingtoamainbuilding.Thismainbuilding,theRotunda,becamethemostimportantpartoftheUniversity,becauseitcontainedthelibrary.Byfocusinghisentireinstitutiononthelibrary,insteadofaroundthechurch,JeffersonrevolutionizedAmericanuniversityarchitecture.

saimwastocreateanewinstitutionalformforhisidealeducationalsystem,asystemhethoughtshouldgiveeverycitizentheinformationheneedsforcarryingouthisdailybusiness.Thisnewapproachtocitizenshipandeducationdemandedanewtypeofuniversity,onewherestudentsandprofessorscouldcoexistandshareideas.Heattemptedtocreatethisenvironmentby
