Chinawasknownasa“alandofdresses”.Ithasalonghistoryinthedevelopmentofitsclothingculture.Dressesindifferentperiodsreflect,toacertainextent,thesituationofthepolitics,economy,militaryaffairs,religions,andthecivilcustomsofthespecifichistoricalstages.Women’sclothingisaleaderinhistoricalcostumes,clothingtextureknownasselectionofnaturalandgracefulandbold,magnificentandelegantdress-upaccessories.SoIwanttotalkaboutthewomen’scostumeintheTangDynasty.
TheideasofHanWudimakingpeacewiththeWestcountrieshadestablishednotonlythediplomaticcontactsandeconomicrelationsbutalsotheexchangesofthevariouscultureandreligionbetweenEastandWest.ThenetworkoftheSilkRoadwassoonflourishedduringtheTangDynasty.TheformsofgarmentsinTangDynastywerestillthecontinuationoftheHanDynastyandtheSuiDynasty,theywereinfluencedbyculturesandartsoftheWestRegions.ThetradesandculturalexchangeswithKorea,Vietnam,Japan,Persiaandothercountriesgraduallybecamefrequent,andtheymutuallydispatchedemissariesandacceptedstudentsofothercountries.Inthisway,aspecialopenandromanticstyleofdressandpersonaladormentswasformed.Woman’scostumeinvariousformsintheTangDynastywellillustratestheopen-mindednessandaffluenceduringthatperiod.
FromtheSuitotheTang,theancientChineseclothingdevelopedtoitspeak,thepoliticalstabilityandeconomicdevelopment,manufacturingandtexitletechnology,thefrequentforeignrelations,contributingtothedevelopmentofclothing.Clothingwereuniqueandnaturalwhichexhibitedtheexquisitenessandpoiseofthepeople.ThefrequentcontactswiththewesternworldhadaninfluenceonthedressingcustomsoftheminorgroupsintheTangperiod.Thisgavewaytoanewlyremarkableandromantictypeoffashioninclothesandornaments.InChinesehistory,everyareahasherowntypicalcostume,whichwasthebrightstarinthatarea.Women’sdressandpersonaladornmentsoftheTangDynastyareoutstandinginChina’shistory.ItisamajorattractionofTangDynasty’scostume.ThemosttypicalformofTangcostumeisbarechestandarms,gossamer,widesleeveandlongskirt.
Women’sdressandpersonaladornmentsoftheTangDynastywereoutstandinginChina’shistory.Theclothingmaterialswereexquisite,thestructurewasnatural,gracefulandelegant,andadornmentsweresplendid.ThedressesoftheTangDynastyweremainlymadeofsilk,sodresseswerefamousforsoftnessandlightness.ThedressesoftheTangDynastyboldlyadoptedthefeaturesofforeigngarmentsintermsofformsandadorments,theymainlyreferredtothegarmentsofothercountries,suchastheCentral-Asiacountries,India,Iran,Persia,northcountriesandtheWestRegionsandusedthemtoimprovethecultureoftheTangDynasty.
Tangwomen’sdressescanbeclassifiedintothreecategories:
First,thetraditionalruqunordoublelayeredorpaddedshortJacketthatistypicalofcentralChina.RuqunfuwasthemostpopularintheTangDynasty,itismadeofthetopjacketandlonggownandaskirtonthebottom.Thejacketwasgenerallyveryshortjustabovethewaist,matchedwithashawlandalongdress,whichwasaoutstandingfeatureatthattime.Thecollarwasusuallyverylow.Therewereroundneck,squarecollar,straightcollarandsoon.Bare-collarbecamepopularandperhapshasbeenallovertheordinarypeoplewhichwasartisticimagesappearinginthehistoryofthecostume.Itwasreallybeautifulandcharming.Thetangwomeninheritedthistraditionalstyleanddevelopeditfurther,openingupthecollarasfarasexposingthecleavagebetweenthebreasts,thiswasunheardofandunimaginableinthepreviousdynasties,inwhichwomenhadtocovertheirentirebodyaccordingtotheConfucianclassics,butthenewstylewassoonembracedbytheopen-mindedaristocraticwomenoftheTangDynasty.
Second,Thehufu,oraliendressthatcamefromtheSilkRoad.ItwasafashionforwomentowearHufuwhichwasgarmentsoftheTartarsorthosewholivedintheWesternRegions.AfterthegoldenageofTangDynastyhadended,theinfluenceofHufu,orclothingstylesfromCentralandWesternAsia,graduallyweakenedandTangroyalwomen’sclothingstylesbegintotakeit’stransformation.Narrowcuff,mandarin,andturn-downcollararehufu’stypicalfeatures.
