Asmyhusbandhassaid,theUnitedStatesisofferingasmanyresourcesaspossibletoassistinthesearch.

Andpleaseknowthatwearekeepingallthefamiliesandlovedonesofthoseonthisflightinourthoughtsandprayersatthisverydifficulttime.

Andwiththat,IwanttostartbyrecognizingournewsAmbassadortoChinaAmbassadorBaucus…PresidentWang…ChairmanZhu…VicePresidentLi.DirectorCueller,ProfessorOiandtheStanfordcenter…PresidentSextonfromNewYorkUniversitywhichhasanexcellentstudyabroadprograminShanghai…andJohnThorton,DirectoroftheGlobalLeadershipProgramatTsinghuaUniversity…thankyouallsomuchforjoiningus.

Andmostofall,Iwanttothankallofthestudentforbeingheretoday…andIparticularywanttothankEricSchaferandZhuXuanbaoforthatextraordinaryEnglishandChineseintroduction.

ThatwassuchapowerfulsymbolofeverythingIwanttotalkwithyouabouttoday.

Yousee,bylearningeachother’slanguages-andbyshowingsuchcuriosityandrespectforeachother’scultures-Mr.SchaferandMs.Zhuandallofyouarebuildingbridgesofunderstandingthatleadtosomuchmore.

AndI’mheretodaybecauseIknowthatourfuturedependsonconnectionsliketheseamongyourpeoplelikeyouacrosstheglobe.

That’swhywhenmyhusbandandItravelabroad,wedon'

tjustvisitpalacesandparliamentandmeetwithheadsofstate.

Wealsocometoschoolslikethisonetomeetwithstudentslikeyou.

Becausewebelievethatrelationshipsbetweennationsarenotjustaboutrelationshipbetweengovernmentsorleaders…they’reaboutrelationshipsbetweenpeople,particularlyouryoungpeople.

Soweviewstudyabroadprogramsnotjustasaneducationalopportunityforstudents…butalsoasavitalpartofAmerica’sforeignpolicy.

Yousee,throughthewondersofmoderntechnology,ourworldismoreconnectedthaneverbefore.

Ideascancrossoceanwiththeclickofabutton.

Companiescandobusinessandcompletewithcompaniesacrosstheglobe.

Andwecantext,emailandskypewithpeopleoneverycontinent.

Sostudyingabroadisn’tjustafunwaytospendasemester-it’squicklybecomingthekeytosuccessinourglobaleconomy.

Becausegettingaheadintoday’sworkplacesisn’tjustaboutgettinggoodgradesortestscoresinschool…it’salsoabouthavingrealexperiencewiththeworldbeyondyourborders-experiencewithlanguages,culturesandsocietiesverydifferentfromyourown.

Or,astheChinesesayinggoes:

“Itisbettertotraveltenthousandmilesthantoreadtenthousandbooks.”

Butlet’sbeclear,studyingabroadisaboutsomuchmorethanimprovingyourownfuture-it’salsoaboutshapingthefutureofyourcountriesandoftheworldweallshare.

Becausewhenitcomestothedefiningchallengesofourtime-whetherit’sclimatechange,oreconomicopportunity,orthespreadofnuclearweapons...thesearesharedchallenges.

Noonecountrycanconfrontthemalone...theonlywayforwardistogether.

That’swhyit’ssoimportantforyoungpeoplelikeyoutoliveandstudyineachother’scountries.

Becausethat’showyoudevelopthathabitofcooperation-youdoitbyimprovingyourselfinsomeone’sculture…bylearningeachother’sstories…andbygettingpastthestereotypesandmisconceptionsthattoooftendivideus.

That’showyoucometounderstandhowmuchweallshare.

Andthat’showyourealizethatweallhaveastakeineachother’ssuccess-thatcuresdiscoveredhereinBeijingcouldsavelivesinAmerica…thecleanenergytechnologiesfromSiliconValleyinCaliforniacouldimprovetheenvironmenthereinChina…thatthearchitectureofanancienttempleinXi’ancouldinspirethedesignofnewbuildingsinDallasorDetroit.

Andthat’swhentheconnectionsyoumakeasclassmatesorlabmatescanblossomintosomethingmore.

That’swhathappenedwhenAbigailCoplinbecameanAmericanFulbrightScholarhereatPekingUniversity.

Sheandhercolleaguespublishedpaperstogetherintopsciencejournals…andtheybothresearchpartnershipsthatlastedlongaftertheyreturnedtotheirhomecountries.

ProfessorNiuKefromPekingUniversitywasFulbrightScholarintheU.year…andhereported,andIquote,“themostmemorableexperiencewerewithmyAmericanfriends.”

Theselastingbondsrepresentthetruevalueofstudyingabroad…andIamthrilledthatmoreandmorestudentsaregettingthisopportunity.

ChinaiscurrentlythefifthmostpopulardestinationforAmericansstudyingabroad.
