(2)acknowledge,admit,confess
acknowledge意为
(a)“公开接受或承认某事存在或是真实可信的”,如:

Shewon’tacknowledgethatthereisaproblem.
(b)“认可,(公开)承认某人的贡献、地位或身份,公认”,如:
Heisacknowledgedasanexcellentgoal-keeper.
Someoftheclergyrefusedtoacknowledgethenewking’slegitimacy.有些神职人员拒不承认新登基国王的合法性。
admit意为“(不情愿地)承认某个令人不快或尴尬的事是真的”,如:

confess意为“坦白或交代所犯之罪错”,如:

(3)allot,apportion,allocate
allot指较随意的分配,不含有平等分配的意思,如:

Aspecialtaskwasallottedtoeachperson.
apportion则表示遵循某种公平分配的原则,根据所需按比例分配,如:

allocate多指钱物、财产、供给、领土或权力的分配,带有明确的上级向下级拨发的含义,如:
Halfofthemedicalsupplieshavealreadybeenallocatedtothevictimsoftheearthquake.

(4)announce,declare,proclaim
announce是指首次公开引起公众兴趣、好奇或关注的事情。

declare通常是指在正式场合下毫不隐晦甚或是直白地宣布一件事,如:
Bulgariahaddeclaredherindependencein1908.
Wedeclarethatthetimehascometoalterthisstateofaffair.
proclaim指在公共场合通过口头或其他声音(如号角)来大声宣告,如:
Theringingbellsproclaimedthenewsofthebirthoftheprince.
Thesalesmanproclaimedthathisherbwouldcureallills.
appoint,designate
designate指由某一实权人物或权力机构选定某人出任某职务,该词常含有在上任之前很早就已选定之意。
IamdesignatingyoutoactformewhileIamaway.
ShehasbeendesignatedastheMinisterforEducation.
appoint指未经投票表决而任命某人,且做出任命的人或机构具有法律赋予的这种权力。
Hewasappointedministertoaforeigncountry.
Mr.SmithwasappointedtotheChairmanshipoftheCommittee.
arise,spring,happen,occur
srise通常指某个令人不快的事情露头或出现,除非后接from或outof短语,否则该词不暗示导致某事出现的原因或条件,如:
Mistakesoftenarisefromignorance.
Adifficultyaroserighthere.
Betweenthemseriousdisagreementsimmediatelyarose.
Betteremployasolicitor,sir,incaseanythingshouldarise.
spring指经过一段时间的孕育、准备或隐藏之后突然出现的,如:
Tearssprangfromhereyes.
Plantsspringfromseed.
happen表示“发生”时,既可指在某一特定的时间或地点发生的某一突发事件,又可指在某一时期发生的同一类事件,如:
Theincidenthappenedtwoweeksago.

occur在表示发生时与happen是同义词,但更多地是表示在某一特定的时间或地点发生的某一突发事件,如:

另外,occur还可表示“(某物或某一类事情不止一次地)出现,这时不能用happen来替换occur。

evade意为“(使用技巧、心机等来)巧妙地规避,机警地逃避”,如:

heevadedthequestionsskillfully他巧妙地避开了追问。
elude意为“设法避开了某人的搜索或追求”,如:

elude与avoid的不同之处是,前者含有某人想要避开的对方是在有意追踪他的意思,而后者含有某人想要避开的对方就要与他不期而遇之意。
beat,win
beat意为“战胜,击败”,后接某人、某个球队或敌军;
win意为“赢得一场比赛、战斗或奖品等”,如:
LiuXiangbeatalltheotherrunnersandwonthegoldmedal.
believe,believein
believe意为“相信;
相信某人的话”(认为…是真的),如:
Icouldnotbelievemyeyes!

border,boundary,frontier
两个词都可以表示“边界”。
border的确切意思是“边境”或“边境地区”,即两国边界处所涉及的地区。
Fightinginborderclasheshaskilledatleast12people.边境冲突使得至少12人丧生。
boundary指“边界线”,即将两国或两个地区分开的自然形成的河流或山脉,也可以指地图上标识出来的分界线。
