Here,FWC(FloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommission)showssomecommonmisunderstandingsaboutFloridablackbearsinanefforttoincreasepopularunderstandingofFlorida’slargestlandmammal.
Myth#1:
Feedingblackbearsthatwanderintoyouryardhelpsthebears.
Thefeedingofbears,raccoons,andfoxesisagainsttheFloridalaw.Bearsareopportunisticfeedersandwillrememberwheretofindeasyfoodandreturntothelocation.Iftheycontinuetogainaccesstohumanprovidedfoods,theycanbecomefoodconditionedandhabituated.Bearsthatbegintoexhibitthosebehaviorscanbecomeapublicsafetyriskandpossiblybekilledbywildlifeofficials.Remember“Afedbearisadeadbear.”Ifabearisseeninyouryard,increasetheirnaturalfearofhumansbymakingloudnoisesfromasecurelocation.
