Here,FWC(FloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommission)showssomecommonmisunderstandingsaboutFloridablackbearsinanefforttoincreasepopularunderstandingofFlorida’slargestlandmammal.

Myth#1:

Feedingblackbearsthatwanderintoyouryardhelpsthebears.

Thefeedingofbears,raccoons,andfoxesisagainsttheFloridalaw.Bearsareopportunisticfeedersandwillrememberwheretofindeasyfoodandreturntothelocation.Iftheycontinuetogainaccesstohumanprovidedfoods,theycanbecomefoodconditionedandhabituated.Bearsthatbegintoexhibitthosebehaviorscanbecomeapublicsafetyriskandpossiblybekilledbywildlifeofficials.Remember“Afedbearisadeadbear.”Ifabearisseeninyouryard,increasetheirnaturalfearofhumansbymakingloudnoisesfromasecurelocation.

Myth#2:

Blackbearsarestrictcarnivores(食肉动物)。

WhilethebearfamilyispartoftheOrder(目)Carnivora,theFloridablackbearisdescribedasanomnivore(杂食动物),eatingadietmadeupof80%vegetation,16%insects,and4%meat.Bearswillrarelytrytochase(追逐)downalargeanimal,suchasanadultdeer,forameal,becauseitwillresultinalossofenergy–alotofenergyusedtryingtocatchtheanimalwithverylittlechanceofasuccessfulcatch,thusnoenergygained.

Myth#3:

It’sbesttorunawayorclimbatreetoescapeablackbear.

Blackbearshavecurved(弯曲的)toenails,naturallymakingthemgreatclimbers.Theywillcommonlyclimbtreesorsendtheirbabiesupatreetoescapeanobviousdanger.Nutbearingtrees,likeoaks,arecommonplacestofindblackbearsfeedinginthefall.Blackbearscanrunupto30mph.Runningfromanywildanimalcanalsocauseachaseinstinct(本能),soitisbesttobackawayslowlyandfindasecurelocation,likeavehicleorbuilding.
