ThepathtoDawsonwascoveredwiththirtyfeetofwetsnowthatcouldfallwithoutwarming.

Anavalanche(雪崩)onceclosedthepath,killing63people.FormanywhomadeittoDawson,

however,therewardswereworththedifficulttrip.Ofthefirst20,000peoplewhodugforgold,4,000got

rich.About100ofthesestayedrichmenfortherestoftheirlives.

Butnomatterhowrichtheywere,Dawsonwasnevercomfortable.Necessitieslikefoodand

woodwereveryexpensive.Butsoon,thegoldthatDawsondependedonhadallbeenfound.Thecity

wascrowdedwithdisappointedpeoplewithnointerestinsettlingdown,andwhentheyheardthere

werenewgolddiscoveriesinAlaska,theyleftDawsonCityasquicklyastheyhadcome.Today,
