Goodmorningeveryone,thecountryhasjusttakenpartinagiantdemocraticexercise,perhapsthebiggestinourhistory.over33millionpeoplefromEngland,Scotland,wales,northernirelandandGibraltarhaveallhadtheirsay.weshouldbeproudofthefactthatintheseislandswetrustthepeopleforthesebigdecisions.wenotonlyhaveaparliamentarydemocracy,butonquestionsaboutthe

arrangementsforhowwe&

vegovernedtherearetimeswhenitisrighttoaskthepeoplethemselvesandthatiswhatwehavedone.TheBritishpeoplehavevotedtoleavetheEuropeanUnionandtheirwillmustberespected.

iwanttothankeveryonewhotookpartinthecampaignonmysideoftheargument,includingallthosewhoputasidepartydifferencestospeakinwhattheybelievewasthenationalinterestandletmecongratulateallthosewhotookpartintheLeavecampaignforthespiritedandpassionatecasethattheymade.ThewilloftheBritishpeopleisaninstructionthatmustbedelivered.

itwasnotadecisionthatwastakenlightly,notleastbecausesomanythingsweresaidbysomanydifferentorganisationsaboutthesignificanceofthisdecision.Sotherecanbenodoubtabouttheresult.acrosstheworldpeoplehavebeenwatchingthechoicethatBritainhasmade.iwouldreassurethosemarketsandinvestorsthatBritain&

seconomyisfundamentallystrongandiwouldalsoreassureBritonslivinginEuropeancountriesandEuropeancitizenslivingheretherewillbenoimmediatechangesinyourcircumstances.

Therewillbenoinitialchangeinthewayourpeoplecantravel,inthewayourgoodscanmoveorthewayourservicescanbesold.wemustnowpreparefora

negotiationwiththeEuropeanUnion.ThiswillneedtoinvolvethefullengagementoftheScottish,welshandnorthernirelandgovernmentstoensurethattheinterestsofallpartsofourUnitedKingdomareprotectedandadvanced.Butaboveallthiswillrequirestrong,determinedandcommittedleadership.i&

mveryproudandveryhonouredtohavebeenPrimeministerofthiscountryforsixyears.

vemadegreatsteps,withmorepeopleinworkthaneverbeforeinourhistory,withreformstowelfareandeducation,increasingpeople&

slifechances,

buildingabiggerandstrongersociety,keepingourpromisestothepoorestpeopleintheworldandenablingthosewholoveeachothertogetmarriedwhatevertheirsexuality,butaboveallrestoringBritain&

seconomicstrength.andi&

mgratefultoeveryonewho&

shelpedtomakethathappen.

ihavealsoalwaysbelievedthatwehavetoconfrontbigdecisions,notduck

them.Thatiswhywedeliveredthefirstcoalitiongovernmentin70years,tobringoureconomybackfromthebrink.it&

swhywedeliveredafair,legalanddecisivereferenduminScotland.andit&

swhyimadethepledgetorenegotiateBritain&

positionintheEuropeanUnionandtoholdthereferendumonourmembershipandhavecarriedthosethingsout.

ifoughtthiscampaignintheonlywayiknowhow,whichistosaydirectlyandpassionatelywhatithinkandfeel-head,heartandsoul.iheldnothingback,iwasabsolutelyclearaboutmybeliefthatBritainisstronger,saferandbetteroffinsidetheEuropeanUnionandimadeclearthereferendumwasaboutthisandthisalone-notthefutureofanysinglepoliticianincludingmyself.

ButtheBritishpeoplehavemadeaverycleardecisiontotakeadifferentpathandassuchithinkthecountryrequiresfreshleadershiptotakeitinthisdirection.iwilldoeverythingicanasPrimeministertosteadytheshipoverthecomingweeksandmonthsbutidonotthinkitwouldberightformetotrytobethecaptainthatsteersourcountrytoitsnextdestination.Thisisnotadecisioni&

vetakenlightlybutidobelieveit&

sinthenationalinteresttohaveaperiodofstabilityandthenthenewleadershiprequired.

ThereisnoneedforaprecisetimetabletodaybutinmyviewweshouldaimtohaveanewprimeministerinplacebythestartoftheconservativePartyconferenceinoctober.deliveringstabilitywillbeimportantandiwillcontinueinpostasPrime

ministerwithmycabinetforthenextthreemonths.Thecabinetwillmeetonmonday,theGovernoroftheBankofEnglandismakingastatementaboutthestepsthattheBankandtheTreasuryaretakingtoreassurefinancialmarkets.

wewillalsocontinuetakingforwardtheimportantlegislationthatwesetbeforeParliamentintheQueen&

sSpeech.andihavespokentoHermajestytheQueenthismorningtoadviseherofthestepsthatiamtaking.anegotiationwiththeEuropeanUnionwillneedtobeginunderanewprimeministerandithinkit&

srightthatthisnewprimeministertakesthedecisionaboutwhentotriggerarticle50andstarttheformalandlegalprocessofleavingtheEU.iwillattendtheEuropeancouncilnextweektoexplainthedecisiontheBritishpeoplehavetakenandmyowndecision.TheBritishpeoplehavemadeachoice,thatnotonlyneedstoberespectedbutthoseonthelosingsideoftheargument-myselfincluded-shouldhelptomakeitwork.Britainisaspecialcountry-wehavesomanygreatadvantages-a

parliamentarydemocracywhereweresolvegreatissuesaboutourfuturethroughpeacefuldebate,agreattradingnationwithourscienceandarts,ourengineeringandourcreativity,respectedtheworldover.andwhilewearenotperfectidobelievewecanbeamodelforthemulti-racial,multi-faithdemocracy,thatpeoplecancomeandmakeacontributionandrisetotheveryhighestthattheirtalentallows.
