Waterproofingleatherisoneoftheeasiestwaystoextenditslife.Learnwhatproductsareoutthereandhowyoucanprotectyourfavoriteleathers.

Waterandleatherdonotmix.Leatherthathasbeendampenedorexposedtoexcessiveamountsofmoisture,losesitsnaturaloils,leavingyouwithstained,dry,stiffmaterial.

Waterproofinginvolvesapplyingasurfacecoattoleatherthatwillhelptopreserveitsquality,workmanshipandvalue.Whenyouwaterproofsomething,you'

reprovidingabarrierthatwatercannotpenetrate.

Thereareseveraldifferenttypesofleatherwhichareusedinmakingmanydifferentproducts.Itisofutmostimportancetoknowwhichtypeofleatheryou'

redealingwith.Harshsiliconespraysandwaxes,forexample,cannotbeusedonthin,delicatesplitleathers.Likewise,youwouldreceiveinadequatewaterproofingprotectionfromanubuckleathercoatingifyouappliedittoaworkorhikingboot.

HOWMUCHPROTECTIONDOYOUNEED?

Howmuchprotectionyouwanttoapplytoyourleatherisuptoyou.Itemsthatwillbeusedoutdoorsfrequentlyindamporwetconditionsshouldbetreatedwithmaximumprotection.Bootsandshoeswornduringcoldwintermonths,mostoftenbenefitfromheavyoils,waxesanddressings.Dressgloves,nubuckshoes,andsuedecoatsthatareonlyexposedtoaminimalamountofmoistureneednotbetreatedinthesameway.

Manyleathercleanersandprotectorscanchangethecolorortextureofleather.Findasmallpatchofleatherandtreatthespot,allowingittosoakinovernight.Ifyou'

NOTEABOUTDELICATELEATHERS

Splitleathers,suchassuedeandnubuck,shouldneverbetreatedtraditionaloils,waxesorsiliconesprays.Heavydutyoilsandwaxeschangethecolorandtextureofdelicateleathers.Whenshoppingforanappropriatewaterproofingproductfortheseleathers,lookforonethatspecificallystatesitcantreatnubuckandsuede.

DRESSINGS,OILSANDWAXES

Heavydutydressingsandwaterproofingoilsandwaxesaresoldasbrush-onorrub-onproducts.Theyareusuallyoilbasedandcombinetanningagents（tohelpextendthelifeofyourleather）withwaterproofingagents（thatbondtothematerial）.Thistypeofwaterproofingworkswellonproductscontainingmixedingredients（nylonandleather）,heavyworkandhikingboots,baseballandsoftballmitts,andotheroutdoorleathers.Manyheavyoils,suchasminkoil,alsoconditionleather,leavingyourproductsoftandsupple.

SPRAYS

Spraysareabitmoreconvenientthandressingsandtakesignificantlylesstimetoapply.Siliconespraysrepelwaterandgivematerialaslipperyfeel.Oilbasedsiliconesprayisperfectforboots,shoes,jackets,mittensandothergarments.Waterbasedsiliconespraycanbeusedonmoredelicateleathers,likesuedeandnubuck,carseats,officefurniture,briefcasesandthingarments.Becausesiliconedoeschangethetextureoftheleather,youmaynotappreciatetheslipperyqualityonyourfavoritebaseballglove.

Acryliccopolymerspraysarebestusedonsplitornappyleathers.Thistypeofspraycoversleatherwell,butremainsflexibleandstillallowsthematerialtobreathe.Thisisagoodcoveringfornubuckandsuede.

HOWOFTENDOYOUNEEDTOTREATLEATHER?

Nomatterwhattypeoftreatmentyouuse,youwillneedtoreapplyitfromtimetotime.Allformsofwaterproofingruboffeventually,leavingyourleatherunprotected.Outdoorleathersshouldbetreatedfourtimesperyear.Mostotheritemsneedonlybetreatedtwiceayear.

APPLYINGWAXES,OILSANDDRESSINGS

Waxes,oilsanddressingsaresoldasafairlysolidmaterial.Theycanbeappliedwithasoftcottonragorshoebrush.Toreapthebenefitsofthistypeofproduct,followtheseguidelines:

1.Removeallexcessdirtanddebrisfromtheleatheryouwanttocoat.Paycarefulattentiontoseamsandstitching.Leathercanbebrushedorscrubbed.

2.Usingacleanclothorbrush,applyagenerousamountofproductonallareasoftheleather.Besuretothoroughlycoatseams.

3.Usingabrushorcloth,workproductintotheleatherasevenlyaspossible.

4.Usingacleanrag,wipeoffexcessoil,waxordressingfromtheleather.

5.Allowtostandovernight.

1.Cleanleatheryouwillbetreatingwithasoftcloth.

2.Holdcan6inchesawayfromleatherandsprayanevencoatovermaterial.

3.Allowleathertodrycompletely.

4.Repeat,asnecessary.
