That’sprobablywheremypersonalEvereststorywouldhaveended,wereitnotforanoldfriendandhisobsession(念念不忘)withoneofthegreatestmysteries.In1999,ThomPollardbegantoexploreandfoundtheremainsofGeorgeMallory,thecelebratedBritishclimberwhodisappearedwhileattemptingtobethefirsttoclimbEverest.ButMallory’spartner,SandyIrvine–andthecamerahehadlikelycarried–werenotfound.Themountainclimbingworldhasbeenwonderingwhethertheymighthavereachedthetopin1924.
Pollard’sstorymovedme.Ibegantopackfortheclimbandexpectedthatouradvancedequipmentwouldmakeitmanageable,perhapseasy.Iwaswrong.Onthehighestpointontheplanet,IwasmoretiredthanI’deverbeeninanyclimbing.Alongtheway,Icontinuouslytippedmyhat,notjusttoMalloryandIrvinebuttoanyonewhohasthedrivetopushhimselforherselfupthisroute.Mysearchwasinvain,butIbegantoreconsiderEverest.
