HuaShanisthehighestofChina’sfivesacredmountains.Itis###kilometerseastofXian.Ithasfivepeaksthatresemblethepetalsofaflower.Thehighestpeakis####meters（####feet）。

WehadhaddiscussionsaboutgoingtoHuaShanwithsomegraduatestudentsfromComputerScience.Thatdidn’tworkoutduetochangesinschedulesonbothsides.Also,theywereplanningtodotheclimbatnighttobeabletoreachthepeakatsunrise.Thatdidnotappealtous.Wewantedtospendanightonthemountain.Fran’sdepartmentarrangedatripforus,makingreservationsatthesimplehotelontheNorthPeak.Theysenttwograduatestudentstoaccompanyus,thoughtheyhadnotbeentoHuaShanbefore.Wemetthemat#:

##onSaturdaymorningandtookataxitothetrainstation.Thereweaskedaroundandlocatedamini-bus.Thebusmadeacoupleofstops.Onewastoseeapresentationaboutthetraditionalmedicinesgrownonthemountainandachancetobuysomeofthem.ItprobablywouldhavebeeninterestingifweunderstoodChinese.Ourguidesgaveusthegeneraloutlineaboutwhatwassaid.Theotherstopwasaquicklunchstop.

TherearetwoapproachestoHuaShan.[Chineseproverb:

“ThereisoneroadandonlyoneroadtoHuaShan,”meaningthatsometimesthehardwayistheonlyway.]Thewestentranceinvolves##kilometersofwalkingonaroadbeforeyoustartclimbing.Wewentwiththeeastentrance,wherethebusbringsyoutothebaseofacablecarthatgoesuptothe####meterNorthPeak.OurplanwastowalkuptotheNorthPeak,thenclimbtothefourotherpeaksthenextdayandtakethecablecardown.

Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas（weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection）。

Physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout##degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

WereachedtheNorthPeakbefore#:

##PMandrestedatthehotel.Ourroomwasbasic,butcomfortableandcleanenough.Becausewaterisscarceonthemountain,therewereneithershowersnorsinksavailableforwashing.Inthatsensetheexperiencefeltlikecamping,butweweresleepinginabigtent!

Afterdinneratthehotelrestaurant,wespentsometimetalkingwithourguides.WewereabitsurprisedtofindthattheyboththinkofJapannegatively,butliketheU.S.ItseemsthatJapan’sWWIIbehaviorinChinahasnotbeenforgotten,andisemphasizedinschool.

##AMtowatchthesunrise.FranandImadesleepapriority.Wedidhappentowakeupabitbeforesunrise（ourroomfacedeast）andwentoutsidetowatchtheskybecomerosy.Ironically,ourguidesmissedthesunrisebecausetheyhadstayeduplatewatchingtheEuropeansoccerchampionshipsonthetelevisionintheirroom

Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly####meters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak–mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo（foreigners）aswell.

WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franacceptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofHuaShan（theprayerwasanswered）。

Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.

AfterMiddlePeak,thecrowdsgotmuchthinner.ThenextwasEastPeak,whichhadasteepladderclimbingrock.Franwasdubiousaboutthisascent,butrealizedthattheladderwasn’tsobadandwentforit.Thatwasagooddecisionbecausewewerethenabletodoaloopandthetrailsgotalmostemptyatthispoint.Afterskirtingthetopofacliffwithasteepdropoffonbothsides,weh
