shigh-qualityredwinemarketalsoprovidesevidenceofthegrowthinprivateconsumptionofluxurygoods.In2013,Chinabecamethelargestmarketforredwineintheworld,evenovertakingFrance,withl.86billionbottlesconsumedinChinalastyear.Overthepastfiveyears,China'

sredwineconsumptionhasgrown136percent.

AccordingtomyongoingconsumerresearchinthisareawhileworkingattheUniversityofInternationalBusinessandEconomicsinBeijing,publicconsumptionofsuchexpensivegloballuxurybrandssuchasPradaandArmaniiseasilyexplainedbythedesireto“gainface”andpubliclydisplaysocialclimbingthroughmaterialpossessions.Ontheotherhand,itis“self-reward”thatliesbehindconsumermotivationinthisarea.Chineseconsumerswhohaveexperiencedrapidfinancialandeconomicgainsappearparticularlypronetotheneedtorewardthemselvesfortheirsuccess.Butthishaslittletodowith“gainingface”andimpressingothersandmuchmoretodowiththeneedforpersonalcontentment.
