Everyevening,15-year-oldRashidareturnshomefromschool,changesoutofheruniform,andrushestoaneighboringfarmtohelphermotherharvestvegetables.Herfatherisdisabled,sothemodestprofitthetwoofthemearnmustcoverfood,clothingandothernecessitiesforallsevenchildrenandtheirparents.Despitehavingpreciouslittletimetostudy,Rashidaisoneofthetopstudentsatherjuniorsecondaryschool.Butwithsomuchresponsibilityonhersmallshoulders,sheadmitsthatitissometimeshardforhertoimagineamorepromisingfuture.
Lastyear,Rashidawasinvitedtojoin155othergirlsatCamfedGhana’sfirstGirls’CareerCamp,aprogramdesignedtoinspiregirlsgrowingupinthecountry’sNorthernRegiontodreambig,andtosupportthemtopursuethosedreams.“Weorganizedthiscampbecausewewantedtoletgirlsknowthateveniftheyarestrugglingwithpoverty,theirliveswillnotbedefinedbylimitations,”saysDoloresDickson,CamfedGhana’sExecutiveDirector.
Overthecourseoffivedays,thecampledthejuniorandsecondaryschoolstudentsthrougharangeofexperiencesandcareeropportunitiesthatwereentirelynewtothem.Dr.AgnesApusiga,alecturerfromtheUniversityofDevelopmentStudies,rantheworkshopongoal-settingandcareerchoices,describingtheuniversitiesandtrainingcollegesinGhanathatcouldhelpthemachievetheirdreams.ParticipantsthenvisitedtheUniversityforDevelopmentStudies,wheretheytouredthemedicalschoolandsciencelabs.AnotherhighlightwasaworkshopatthecomputerlabatTamaleSecondarySchool.Manyofthegirlshadstudiedinformationtechnologyfromabookbuthadneverbeforeseenacomputer.
