JohnGlenn,thefirstAmericanastronauttoorbittheearth,learnedhowtoflywhileattendingcollegein1939.Duringthedayhestudiedchemistry,andinhissparetime,hetookflyinglessons.Shortlyafterthe1941attackonPearlHarbor,heleftcollegetojointheMarines,flyingfighterplanesinthePacifictheaterduringtheSecondWorldWar,andlaterintheKoreanconflict.In1959,thenewly-formedNationalAeronauticsandSpaceAdministration,orNASA,putoutacallfortestpilots.Ofthe508competitors,sevenmen,includingJohnGlenn,werechosenforastronauttraining.TheseweretheMercury（水星）7,America’sspacepioneers.JohnGlenndidnotgethiswishofbecomingthefirstmaninspace,buthedidbecomethefirstAmericanindeepspace,orbitingtheearththreetimesonFebruary20th,1962.

Atthetime,fewmembersofthepublicrealizedthedangersinvolvedinspaceflight.“Theriskswereextremelyhigh,”saidthen-NASAFlightDirectorGeneKrantz.“Andyouknow,whenweputJohnGlennonboardarocket,hewasflyingthe6thAtlasand2oftheprevious5hadblownup.”

DiscouragedbylackofflightassignmentsintheApollomoonshotprogram,JohnGlennleftNASAin1964.Forthenextdecade,heworkedintheprivateapartment.Eventually,heranfortheU.S.Senate（参议院）and,aftertwofailedattempts,wonaseatin1974.HewouldrepresentOhiofor24years.Andjustbeforeheendedhispoliticalcareer,attheageof77,hebecametheoldestpersontoflyinspaceasamemberoftheDiscoveryspaceshuttle.
