Internationalconsensushasbeenreachedontheprinciplesregardingevaluationofthefoodsafetyofgeneticallymodifiedplants.Theconceptofsubstantialequivalencehasbeendevelopedaspartofasafetyevaluationframework,basedontheideathatexistingfoodscanserveasabasisforcomparingthepropertiesofgeneticallymodifiedfoodswiththeappropriatecounterpart.Applicationoftheconceptisnotasafetyassessmentperse,buthelpstoidentifysimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweentheexistingfoodandthenewproduct,whicharethensubjecttofurthertoxicologicalinvestigation.Substantialequivalenceisastartingpointinthesafetyevaluation,ratherthananendpointoftheassessment.Consensusonpracticalapplicationoftheprincipleshouldbefurtherelaborated.Experienceswiththesafetytestingofnewlyinsertedproteinsandofwholegeneticallymodifiedfoodsarereviewed,andlimitationsofcurrenttestmethodologiesarediscussed.ThedevelopmentandvalidationofnewprofilingmethodssuchasDNAmicroarraytechnology,proteomics,andmetabolomicsfortheidentificationandcharacterizationofunintendedeffects,whichmayoccurasaresultofthegeneticmodification,isrecommended.Theassessmentoftheallergenicityofnewlyinsertedproteinsandofmarkergenesisdiscussed.Anissuethatwillgainimportanceinthenearfutureisthatofpost-marketingsurveillanceofthefoodsderivedfromge
