Whileitisundeniablethatprivatecaruseisoneofthemaincausesoftheincreaseintrafficandpollution,higherfuelcostsareunlikelytolimitthenumberofdriversforlong.Asthispolicywouldalsoaffectthecostofpublictransport,itwouldbeveryunpopularwitheveryonewhoneedstotravelontheroads.Buttherearevariousothermeasuresthatwouldbeimplementedthatwouldhaveahugeeffectontheseproblems.

Ithinktotackletheproblemofpollution;

cleanerfuelsneedtobedeveloped.Thetechnologyisalreadyavailabletoproduceelectriccarsthatwouldbebothquieterandcleanertouse.Persuadingmanufacturersandtravelerstoadoptthisnewtechnologywouldbeamoreeffectivestrategyforimprovingairquality,especiallyincities.

However,trafficcongestionwillnotbesolvedbychangingthetypeof

privatevehiclepeoplecanuse.Todothis,weneedtoimprovethechoiceofpublictransportservicesavailabletotravelers.Forexample,ifsufficientskytrains

andundergroundtrainsystemswerebuiltandeffectivelymaintainedinourmajorcities,thentrafficontheroadswouldbedramaticallyreduced.Long-distancetrainandcoachservicesshouldbemadeattractiveandaffordablealternativestodrivingyourowncarforlongjourneys.
