  Kerosenewasusedtolightlamps.Itwasacheapsubstituteforwhaleoil,whichwasbecominghardertoget.Soontherewasalargedemandforkerosene.Peoplebegantosearchfor newsuppliesofpetroleum.

  ThefirstoilwellwasdrilledbyE.L.Drake,aretiredrailroadconductor.In1859hebegan drillinginTitusville,Pennsylvania.Thewholeventureseemedsoimpracticalandfoolishthat onlookerscalledit"Drake'sFolly".Butwhenhehaddrilleddownabout70feet(21meters), Drakestruckoil.Hiswellbegantoyield20barrelsofcrudeoiladay.
