Withthedevelopmentofmarketeconomy,advertisementshavebeemoreandmoreimportantinoursociety.Asweknow,adsplayanimportantroleinourlife.Theygiveussomeinformationaboutnewproducts.However,someadsarenotveryusefultopeople,sometimesevenharmful.Therefore,itiswiseforpeopletomakesuretheadsaretellingthetruth.Thisunitmainlytalksaboutads.Bylearningthisunit,wenotonlywantthestudentstolearnsomethingaboutadsbutalsowanttostimulatethestudents’interestinads.Ofcourse,itisnecessaryforthestudentstomastertheusefulphrasesandexpressionsinthisunit.Meanwhile,wealsoreviseanimportantelement—theObjectplement.

1.HowDidAdvertisingeabout

Advertisingisawayofinformingpeopleofsomething.Thiscanrangefromtellingthemofaproductforsale,oraservice,orurgingthemtodosomething,oreventobringone’snamebeforethepublic.Soadvertisingcameoutquitenaturallyandtookmanyformsfromtheverybeginning.Forexample,thereisapapyrusdiscoveredatThebesofferingarewardforarunawayslave.Itisthreethousandyearsold—andit’sreallyanadvertisement!

SignboardsthatnotifiedpeopleofservicesavailablewereplacedoutsidedoorsinGreeceandEgyptaround1500B.C.—aformofadvertising.Withtheinventionofprinting,advertisingbegantotakeonnewforms.About1477,inLondon,thefirstprintedadvertisementinEnglishannouncedaprayerbooksale.ThefirstnewspaperadvertisementappearedonthebackpageofLondonnewspaperin1625.Itwasnotuntil1704thatpaidadvertisementswereprintedintheUnitedStates.By1771therewere31newspapersintheColonies,andallofthemcarriedadvertising.Today,ofcourse,weknowthatadvertisingisdonenotonlyinnewspapers,butalsoinmagazines,ontheradio,andontelevision.Thefirst“mercials”appearedonradioabout1920mercialsontelevisiondevelopedmostlyafterWorldWarⅡ.TheideaspreadveryquicklyandtodaytheadvertisingthatisdoneonTVissofamiliartoallofusthatmanypeoplecanrememberthemercialsevenbetterthantheshowstheysee!
