network（WLAN）productbasedontheInstituteofElectricalandElectronics

Engineers’（IEEE）802.11standards”.However,the-Fiterm”isused“Wiingeneral

Englishasasynonymfor“WLAN”sincemostmodernWLANsarebasedonthese

standards.

ManymoderndevicescanuseWi-Fi,e.g.personalcomputers,video-gameconsoles,smartphones,digitalcameras,tabletsanddigitalaudioplayers.ThesecanconnecttoanetworkresourcesuchastheInternetviaawirelessnetworkaccesspoint.Suchanaccesspoint（orhotspot）cancoveranareaassmallasasingleroomwithwallsthatblockradiowaves,oraslargeasmanysquarekilometersbyusingmultipleoverlappingaccesspoints.

Wi-Fiallowscheaperdeploymentoflocalareanetworks（LANs）.SpaceswherecablescannotberuncanalsohostwirelessLANs.Manufacturersarebuildingwirelessnetworkadaptersintomostlaptops.ThepriceofchipsetsforWi-Ficontinuestodrop,makingitaneconomicalnetworkingoptionincludedinevenmoredevices.Differentcompetitivebrandsofaccesspointsandclientnetworkinterfacescaninter-operateatabasiclevelofservice.

Manytraditionaluniversitycampusesinthedevelopedworldprovideatleast

partialWi-Ficoverage.CarnegieMellonUniversitybuiltthefirstcampus-wide

wirelessInternetNetworkatitsPittsburghcampusin1993.ByFebruary1997the

CMUWi-Fizonewasfullyoperational.Manyuniversitiescollaborateinproviding

Wi-Fiaccesstostudentsandstaffthroughtheeduroam（educationroaming）

internationalauthenticationinfrastructure.

Laptop

Alaptop（alsoknownasanotebook）isaportablepersonalcomputerdesignedfor

mobileusesmallenoughtositonone’slap.Alaptopismadeupofalargenumberof

componentsthatallmustfunctionwellinorderforyourcomputerexperiencetobecomplete,whichincludeadisplay,akeyboard,apointingdevice（atouchpad,alsoknownasatrackpad,and/orapointingstick）,speakers,aswellasabattery,intoasinglesmallandlightunit.
