  cheating.AcaseinpointisstudentsinNewYorkStatewhofacedcriminalmisdemeanorchargesforpossessingandsellingadvancecopiesofstateRegents

  examinations.

  Cheatingisconsideredtobeamajorproblemincollegesand

  universities.Severalprofessorssaythey’vedroppedthetraditionaltermpaperrequirementbecausemanystudentsbuyprewrittentermpapers,andtheycan’ttrackdownallthecheaters

  anymore.

  Collegesanduniversitiesacrossthenationhavedecidedtodomorethantalkabouttheriseinstudent

  cheating.Forinstance,theDepartmentofPsychologyattheUniversityofMarylandlaunchedacampaigntostoponeformof

  cheating.As409studentsfiledoutoftheirexam,theyfoundallbutoneexit

  blocked.ProctorsaskedeachstudenttoproduceanIDcardwithanattached

  photo.Studentswhosaidthey’dlefttheirsinthedormorathomehadamugshot

  taken.Thepurposeofthecampaignwastocatch“ringers,”studentswhotaketestsforother

  students.

  ThemajorityofstudentsattheUniversityofMarylandapplaudedthe

  campaign.Thecampusnewspapereditorialsaid,“Likepolicearrestingspeeders,theintentisnottocatcheveryonebutrathertocatchenoughtospreadthe

  customer.It’sthekindofstorywethinkofas

  myth.ButinthecaseofLincoln,thestoryistrue…unlikethestoryofGeorgeWashingtonandthecherry

  tree.Washington’sfirstbiographerinventedthetaleoflittleGeorgesayingtohisfather,“Icannottella

  lie.Ididitwithmy

  ax.”Whatisimportantinbothstories,however,isthathonestywasseenasanimportantpartoftheAmerican

  character.

  Andthesearejusttwostoriesoutof

  many.Studentsinthelastcenturyusuallydidn’tread“fun”

  stories.Theyreadstoriesthattaughtmoral

  values.Suchstoriespointedoutquiteclearlythatchildrenwholied,cheated,orstolecametobad

  ends.

  Parentsmayhavefurtherreinforcedthose

  values.It’sdifficultto

  know.Wedoknowthatchildrendidn’theartheirparentstalkofcheatingthegovernmentonincometaxes-thereweren’t

  any.

  AclueastowhyAmericansmayhavebeenmorehonestinthepastliesintheAbeLincoln

  story.Lincolnknewhis

  customer.Theybothlivedinasmall

  town.Wouldacheck-outpersonatalargesupermarketreturnmoneyacustomer?

  ThevastmajorityofAmericansstillbelievethathonestyasanimportantpartoftheAmerican

  Character.Forthatreason,therearenumerouswatch-dogcommitteesatalllevelsof

  society.Althoughsignsofdishonestyinschool,business,andgovernmentseemmuchmorenumerousinrecentyearsthaninthepast,coulditbethatwearegettingbetteratrevealingsuchdishonesty?

  Thereissomeevidencethatdishonestymayebband

  flow.Whentimesarehard,incidentsoftheftandcheatingusuallygo

  up.Andwhentimesgetbettersuchincidentstendtogo

  down.

  Cheatinginschoolalsotendstoebband

  flow.Butitdoesn’tseemlinkedtothe

  economy.

  Manyeducatorsfeelthatasstudentsgainconfidenceinthemselvesandtheirabilities,theyarelesslikelyto

  cheat.Surprisingly,someeffortstopreventcheatingmayactuallyencouragecheating-apersonmayfeel“theydon’ttrustmeanyway,”andbetemptedto“beatthe
