TheearliestMother'sDaycelebrationsaretracedbacktothespringcelebrationsofancientGreeceinhonorofRhea,theMotheroftheGods.

Duringthe1600's,Englandcelebratedadaycalled"MotheringSunday",celebratedonthe4thSundayofLent."MotheringSunday"honoredthemothersofEngland.DuringthistimemanyoftheEngland'spoorworkedasservantsforthewealthy.Asmostjobswerelocatedfarfromtheirhomes,theservantswouldliveatthehousesoftheiremployers.OnMotheringSundaytheservantswouldhavethedayoffandwereencouragedtoreturnhomeandspendthedaywiththeirmothers.Aspecialcake,calledthemotheringcake,wasoftenbroughtalongtoprovideafestivetouch.

AsChristianityspreadthroughoutEuropethecelebrationchangedtohonorthe"MotherChurch"--thespiritualpowerthatgavethemlifeandprotectedthemfromharm.OvertimethechurchfestivalblendedwiththeMotheringSundaycelebration.Peoplebeganhonoringtheirmothersaswellasthechurch.

IntheUnitedStatesMother'sDaywasfirstsuggestedin1872byJuliaWardHoweasadaydedicatedtopeace.

In1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Ms.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginiatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay.BythenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.

Ms.Jarvisandhersupportersbegantowritetoministers,businessman,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Itwassuccessful,by1911Mother'sDaywascelebratedinalmosteverystate.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMother'sDayanationalholidaythatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.

WhilemanycountriesoftheworldcelebratetheirownMother'sDayatdifferenttimesthroughouttheyear,therearesomecountriessuchasDenmark,Finland,Italy,Turkey,Australia,andBelgiumwhichalsocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondSundayofMay.

    Halloweenisaholidayobserved1ontheeveningofOctober31inmostareasofNorthAmericaandinsomeareasofWesternEurope.Theword“Halloween”comesfrom“AllHallows'Eve.”November1,“AllHallows'Day”（or“AllSaints'Day”）,isaCatholic（天主教的）festivalobservedinhonour2ofallsaints.AllSouls'Day,observedonNovember2tohelppurify3thespiritsofthedead,isalsocloselylinkedtoHalloween.
