TheSecondConditionalreferstoanunreal（orveryunlikely）situationinthePRESENTtime.ThemostconfusingthingaboutthesecondconditionalisthatweusethePASTTENSEinthe"if"clause,eventhoughwe'rereferringtothePRESENT!

Considerthefollowingexamples:

Iamverybusy（andverybroke）.AsI'msittinghereinfrontofmycomputer,I'mthinkingabouttakingatriptoSouthAmerica.Itwouldbereallynicetogototheairportandgetonaplanerightnow.However,thisiscompletelyimpossible!

Icanexpressthisbysaying,"IfIhadthetime,IwouldgotoSouthAmerica."（Icouldalsosay,"IfIhadthemoney,IwouldgotoSouthAmerica."）

MyfriendJohnisalwaystalkingabouthowexpensiverestaurantsare.Henevergoestothegrocerystoreandhiskitchencupboardsarealwaysempty.Onedayhestartscomplainingagain.Isay,"John,ifyoulearnedhowtocook,youwouldn'tneedtoeatoutallthetime."（ItishighlyunlikelythatJohnwilllearnhowtocook.）

TheThirdConditional

TheThirdConditionalreferstoanunrealsituationinthePAST.Inotherwords,itreferstosomethingthatdidNOThappeninthepast,thoughmaybeitwasonceanoption.ThemostconfusingthingaboutthethirdconditionalisthatweusethePASTPERFECTinthe"if"clause,eventhoughwe'rereferringtothePAST.Considerthefollowingexamples:

MyfriendLizlikesthisguynamedJoe.LastweekIhadaparty.Joecametomyparty.Liz'sparentswereintownsoshewentouttodinnerwiththem.Shedidnotcometotheparty.Itellher,"Toobad.Ifyouhadcometotheparty,youwouldhaveseenJoe."

ItookthreeweeksoffworkinJanuary.SinceIdidn'tgetpaidformytimeoff,Idon'thaveanyextramoneyrightnow.Icanexpressthisbysaying,"IfIhadn'ttakenthattimeoff,Iwouldhavemoremoney."
