Someofyoubecameinterestedincookingbecauseyouwereworriedaboutyourfriends'unhealthyeatinghabits.SomethingthatItrytoworkwithmyfriendsonallthetime.Now,IzzyWashburnfromKentuckyactuallydid–thisisIzzy–raiseyourhand.Izzyrightthere.Shedidascienceexperimentcomparingschoollunchestothelunchesherfriendsbroughtfromhome,andtheschoollunchesturnedouttobehealthier,accordingtoyourexperiment.

Andthatwasn'talwaysthecase.Weallknowthatwe'veseensometremendousimprovementsinourschoollunchesovertheseyears.Anditactuallytookawholelotofworkbypeopleinyourschoolcafeteriastoactuallyaccomplishthisgoal.

Backin2019,basedonsomeadvicethatwegotfromdoctorsandnutritionistsandscientistsinthiscountry,werealizedthatweneededtoimprovethequalityofschoolmealsbyaddingfruitsandveggiesandwholegrains.Anditrequiredalot–alittleenergytomakethathappen,alittlepushingback.Butrightnow,today,95percentofschoolsinthiscountryarenowmeetingthosenewstandards.Andthat'sawonderfulachievement.

Sonowtensofmillionsofkidsarenowgettingbetternutritioneverysingleday.JustlikeAbbypointedout,therearemanykidswhogotoschoolandtheydon'thavebreakfast,andbreakfastisthemostimportantmealoftheday.Soyouimagine,nowtheschoolsalloverthiscountryareprovidingthatkindofnutritionsokidswhomightnotgetthatnutritionathomearegettingitatschool.Thisisanimportantstepforward.AndIknowyouguysallagreebecauseyouunderstandtheimportanceofhealthyeating.

SoIknowthatIzzycertainlybelievesso.Thisisherquote–shesaid,“It'simportanttoteachmyfriendswhatgoodchoiceslooklikeandhowwhatfueltheychoosefortheirbodiesaffectshowtheyperformthroughouttheirday.”Verywiseforsuchalittle-bittyperson.

Andthat'swhywecreatedLet'sMoveandstartedhostingtheseKids'StateDinners–because,asAbbysaidinherremarks,wewantyouguystobeambassadorsandtotalkabouthealthyeatinginyourschoolsandinyourcommunities.

Sothat'sreallyoneofthethings–oneofthethingsyouwilldotopayforthisopportunityisthatyou'regoingtopayitforward,andhopefullywhenyougoback,you'llnotonlysharethisexperiencewithyourfriendsandfamily,butyou'llalsotalkaboutwhywe'redoingthis.Becausealotofkidsdon'tunderstandthatfoodisfuelinaveryfundamentalway.Andsometimestheydon'tlistentogrown-ups,andtheydon'tlistentotheFirstLady.Butmanyofthemwilllistentoyoubecauseyou'relivingproofofthatreality.

SoIwantyoutokindofthinkabouthowyoucanmovethisissueforwardinyourcommunities.Whatmorecanyoudowhenyougetbackhometocontinuethisconversationandtoengagemoreyoungpeopleintheworkthatyoualldo.That'stheonlythingthatIaskofyou–andjusttokeepbeingtheamazing,wonderfulhumanbeingsthatyouare.

Wedevelopedthisreallycool–weworkedwithaPRfirmtodevelopthisreallycoolcampaignforfruitsandvegetablescalledFNV.Andit'sbeingpilotedincertainpartsofthecountry.Theideabehindthecampaignisverysimple:
