“Whensomeoneloseseverythinginafire,theyshouldn’tthenbeforcedtolosetheirpets—theirfamilymembers—aswell,”Learysaid.“Lettingthemknow,‘We’lltakecareofyouranimallikeitisourown’meanstheworldtopeople.”
Afterabigfirein2011,Learyformedherorganization.Sincethen,Learyandhergrouphaveprovidedhelptonearly1,000animalsandtheirfamiliesthroughoutsoutheasternPennsylvania.LiketheRedCross,butforanimals.
RedPawcaredfortheDonnellys’catformorethanthreeweeks.“Icriedwhenwewerereunited,”saidDonnelly.“Theywentaboveandbeyondthecallofduty.Iamsothankful.”

Then,in2006,ascientistnamedRalphLorenzcameupwithanewtheory.Hesuggestedthatinthewinter,thickiceformsaroundtherocks.Whenthegroundbeginstothaw(解冻),therocks,wearingice,sailalong,leavingtrailsbehindthem.Lorenzputhistheorytothetestinhisownkitchen.Hedroppedarockintoadish,addedalittlewater,andstuckthedishinhisfridge.Later,hetookouttherockandplaceditinadishofwaterwithsandatthebottom.Sureenough,withjustabreath,Lorenzwasabletosendtherockmovingacrossthewater—leavingatrailinthesandasitmoved.
