Researchersbelievetheeffectthrowslightonourevolutionarypast.Itmayarisefrombehavioralcharacteristicsthatdevelopedwhenearlyhumansformedsocialgroupstostrengthentheirchancesofsurvival.Forsocialgroupstowork,individualshadtoco-operate,ratherthanactselfishly.“There’sanargumentthatifnobodyiswatchingus,itisinourintereststobehaveselfishly.Butwhenwe’rebeingwatchedweshouldbehavebetter.Sopeopleseeusasco-operativeandbehavethesamewaytowardsus,”Batesonsaid.

Thenewfindingindicatesthatpeoplehaveastrikingresponsetoeyes.Thatmightbebecauseeyesandfacessendastrongbiologicalsignalwehaveevolvedtorespondto,Batesonsaid.

Thefindingcouldbeputtopracticaluse.Forexample,imagesofeyescouldensureticketsalesonpublictransportandimprovesurveillance(监视)systemstodeteranti-socialbehavior.
