FOREWORD
Ahandbookforindependentcurators,andthosewhoengagethem,hasbeenaconcernoftheArtMuseumsAssociationofAustraliaforsometime.Plansforthisbookbeganinresponsetotheneed,stronglyexpressed,byanumberofindependentcuratorsthroughoutAustraliawhowerebeentoclarifytheirroles,theirrightsandresponsibilities.
Thisbookisthefistofitskind.Itwillprovideguidanceabouttheoftencomplexissuesanddemandsofindependentpractice;anditwillgivesupporttoindividualsandorganizationssettingupprojectstogether.Itemphasizesthenecessityforgoodcommunicationbetweentheconsultantandtheclientandsuggestsguidelinestofostergenuinecollaborationandestablishsharedpurposeandgoals.
WehavebeenfortunatetohaveAlisonCarrollastheauthor.ShehasdirectexperienceofworkingwithinaStateGallery,acontemporaryartspace,withinvariousMinistriesandforfundingbodies,aswellascurrentlyemployingindependentcuratorsforinternationalexhibitions.Morerecentlyshehastakenonthechallengesoffreelancepracticeshouldbeasatisfyingandfulfillingservice,performedwithconfidenceandoptimism.

INTRODUCTION
Independentcuratorialpracticeisagrowingareaofworkinmuseumsandgalleriesworld-wide.ItislingestablishedinAmerica,whereICI(IndependentCuratorsIncorprated)hasastaffofseventomanagetouringexhibitionsbyindependentcuratorsutilizedbymorethan225artmuseum,universityartgalleries,artcentersandalternativespaces.
ThisguideaimstoclarifyissuesforbothcuratorsandinstitutionsinthisareaofworkinAustraliasothattheadvantagesofthisrelationshipcanbeencouraged,andlikelypitfallsavoided.
Therearemanyadvantagestoemployingindependentcurators.Theinstitutionisabletoattractavarietyofideasandskillsbeyondthoseofitspermamentstaff,whomaybeprimarilyinvolvedincollectionmanagement.Itcanaddaparticularexpertise.Itcanattractaninjectionofenthusiasmandenergy.Itcanevenbeusedasawaytoaddanextrapairofhandsforoneproject,whenamorelengthycommitmentmaybefinanciallyimpossible.Itcanemployspecialistswhomaynotwishtobeinvolvedfulltimewiththeinstitution(forexample,thosewholiveelsewhere).Itmayenablethemountingofspecialevents,withspecialiststaff,perhapsonascalebeyonditsusualfinancialandorganizationalscope.Alsotheinstitutionmaybeabletotakeriskwithideasorspecialprojectsoutsideitsnormalframeofreference.
Independentcuratorsarefreetoworkinareasoftheirownchoice,coveringvariousmediaorchronologiesorideaswhichaninstitutionaljobspecificationmayinhibit.Alsotheycanworkforavarietyofemployers:
fromlargemuseumstolocalgovernmentorganizationstosmallartist-runspace;inthecityandthecountry;locallyandinternationally;withprojectswhicharefinanciallyandorganizationallywellsupportedandwiththosewhicharemoregrass-root.Throughthis,theirprofessionalexperiencebroadens;theymakecontactwithavarietyofdifferentpointsofviewandphilosophicalaimsasincreasingtheirpracticalknowledge.Thepracticealsooffersfreedomfromthebureaucraticworkwhichtakessomuchofthetimeofthestaffofaninstitution.
Independentcuratorsarecurrentlyemployedinmostareasofartsexhibitions:
fromlarge-scaleBiennales,tomajorexhibitionsforStareGalleries,totouringexhibitionsofregionalgalleries,toone-offshowsforcontemporaryartsspaces,toprojectsforspecialinterestgroups.Employmentcanbeforperiodsofonemonthtooverayear.Ratesofpaymentcanbeintentsofthousandsofdollarstorelativelysmallamount.Andtheexpertiseemployedcanbefromanewlyfledgedcuratortosomeonewithverywideexperience.

However,witharelativelynewpractice,asthisisinAustralia,manyissuearisewhichneedthoughtandclarification.Whatcouldbeanidealandmutuallybeneficialpartnershipcaneasilyturnsourbythepracticaldetailsofthearrangementnotidentifiedanagreeduponatthebeginning.
TheA.M.A.A.believesitissensibletohaveawrittencontract.However,evenifneitherpartwantstohaveone,itisworthtakingtimetogothroughthisbookletand,foreachprojectundertaken,notethisissueswhichwillbepertinent(aswellasoneswhichmaybe.)Discussthem,andgainconsensusonwhethertheyarerelevant,whoisresponsible,whodoeswhat,andwhen.Majorissues,suchasdeadlinesforapprovalofideas,orforpayment,orissuesrelatingtotheterminationofproject,shouldbeputinwriting.
Theguidereferstoindependentcuratorialpracticewheretheworkisprimarilythepreparationofexhibitionsandadjacentactivities,suchaspublications,seminarsandotherpublicevent.Howeverthepointsdiscussedwouldalsobeusefultopeopleworkingindependentlyonotherartinstitutionalactivities,likeconsultanciesonpolicy,orcollecting,orworkonconferences,orspecialpublications.
Theguidediscussescontractsandfees.Bothhaveacentralbearingonindependentcuratorialemployment.Howeverthespiritoftheagreementiscrucialtothework.

Theidea
Someonewantssomethingtohappen.Theinstitutionhasanideaorneedwhichitcannotsatisfyformwithinitsownresources.Itadvertisesfororinvitesacuratortodevelopandimplementtheidea.
Or,andindependentcuratorapproachesaninstitutionwithanideaoftheirownwhichtheywanttodevelopandputintoeffect.
Youagreetheprojectcouldbemutuallysatisfactory.

atouringexhibitionforaStategallery,oramajorregionalgallery;athemeofnationalorinternationalimportance;abigbudgetofsayover$250,000-uptoover$1,000,000forsomemajorinternationalevents;asubstantialcatalogue,withatleastonmajororanumberoflesseressays;commercialsponsorship.
‘Medium’couldinclude:
asmallershowataStategallery;aregionalgallerytourtoaboutthreevenues;abudgetfrom$80,000-$250,000dependingonmedia;acataloguewithoneessay.
‘Small’couldinclude:
onevenueataregionalgallery,CAC,orothervenuee.g.acommunityspace;acommunityspace;abudgeformaslowas$15,000to$80,000(Note:
exhibitionscancoursebemountedforlessthanthis,butitwouldbeunusualtoemployacuratorforesuchaproject;asmallcatalogue.

Itisunlikelythatthecuratorwillhaveanideaalreadyevolvedandafinalizedlistofworksevenifthecomesfromthem.Iftheideaistheinstitution’sthenitobviouslyneedsadevelopmentperiods.
