Haveyoueverheardofbirdsthatcanswim?

TherearemanyAmericannovelistsintheliteraryworld.Forexample,ScottFitzgerald,bornonSeptember24,1896,wasonceastudentofSt.PaulAcademy,theNewmanSchoolandattendedPrincetonUniversityforashortwhile.In1917hejoinedthearmyandwaspostedinAlabama,wherehemethisfuturewifeZeldaSayre.Thenhehadtomakesomemoneytoimpressher.

ThisSideofParadise,hisfirstnovel,waspublishedin1920.Encouragedbyitssuccess,Fitzgeraldbegantodevotemoretimetohiswriting.ThenhecontinuedwiththenoveltheBeautifulandDamned(1922),acollectionofshortstoriesThalesoftheJazzAge(1922),andaplayTheVegetable(1923).ButhisgreatestsuccesswasthenovelTheGreatGatsby,publishedin1925,whichquicklybroughthimpraisefromtheliteraryworld.Yetitfailedtogivehimtheneededfinancialsecurity.Then,in1926,hepublishedanothercollectionofshortstoriesAlltheSadYoungMen.

However,Fitzgerald’sproblemswithhiswifeZeldahadaneffectonhiswriting.Duringthe1920shetriedtoreorderhislife,butfailed.By1930,hiswifehadherfirstbreakdownandwenttoaSwissclinic.DuringthisperiodhecompletednovelsTenderIstheNightin1934andTheloveofthelastTycoonin1940.WhilehiswifewasinhospitalintheUnitedStates,hegottotallyaddictedto(沉迷于)alcohol.SheilaGraham,hisdearfriend,helpedhimfighthisalcoholism.
