In1936,Grahammadeherdefiningwork,“Chronicle”,whichsignaledthebeginningofanewera（纪元）inmodemdance.Thedancebroughtseriousissuestothestageforthegeneralpublicinadramaticmanner.InfluencedbytheWallStreetCrashof1929,theGreatDepressionthatfollowed,andtheSpanishCivilWar,itfocusedondepressionandisolation,reflectedinthedarknatureofboththesetandcostumes.Grahamcontinuedtodancepasttheageofseventy.Onceagain,shewasmetwithcriticismfrompeoplewhocametowatchhershows.Butshedidn’tgiveup.Herlastcompletedballet（芭蕾舞）was1990’sMapleLeafRag.“ADancer’sWorld”isanintroductiontoGrahamandherwork.Shetellsaboutherdancesandherdancegroupshowssomeoftheirmethods.

MarthaGrahamreceivedmanyawardsduringherlifetime,includingthePresidentialMedalofFreedominnineteenseventy-six.Shewasthefirstdancertoreceivethecountry’shighestcivilianhonor.Shediedin1991attheageofninety-six.In1998,Timemagazinelistedherasthe“DanceroftheCentury”andasoneofthemostimportantpeopleofthetwentiethcentury.
