ThestudyfoundthehighestlevelsofmicroplasticscamefromtheBavarianAlps.Onesnowsamplefromtheareahad154,000microplasticparticlesperliter.SamplescollectedfromtheArctichadmuchlowerlevels.However,evensamplesfromtheArcticcontainedupto14,000particlesperliter.

Thestudyalsoattemptedtoexplorehowsomeofthematerialcouldhavebeencarriedintheatmosphere.Alimitednumberofearlierstudiesdidfindmicroplasticsintheairofsomecities,includingParis,TehranandDongguan,China.

BergmannMelanieco-wrotethereportonthenewstudy.Shebelievesthenewstudyclearlyshowsthat“themajorityofthemicroplasticinthesnowcomesfromtheair.”ThenewstudysuggeststhatmuchofthemicroplasticfoundinEuropeandtheArcticcomesfromtheatmosphereandsnow.
