WhileAdam’sScoutingachievementsareimpressiveontheirown,histimeinScoutshasnotalwaysbeensoeasy.Adamhashemophilia,amedicalconditionthatcancauseseverebleedingfromevenaslightinjury.AndasaBoyScout,spendingmuchtimeoutinthewilderness,itisquitecommontogetminorinjuries.Becauseofhiscondition,AdamhashadtomisssomeScoutingactivitiesovertheyears.

ThefirstfewdaysofAdam’sbackpackinginPhilmontwentsmooth.Butonthe3rdday,whileunloadinghisgearataremotecampsite,hefeltasharppaininhisback.Adamtoldtheadultleadersabouthisbackandthathewasstartingtonotfeelwell.TheymadethedecisiontocallPhilmontbasecamptoseekmedicalattention.

Itwasgettingdarkandrainthreatened.Twodoctorssetoutintothenightonbackcountryroadsandthenhikedinthelast1/2miletofindAdam.Theydidsometestsanddecidedtotakehimbackwiththemtobasecamp.ItwasatoughmomentforAdamandfortherestofthescoutcrew.WhileAdamreturnedtobasecamp,therestoftheboysbackpackedon.ToencourageAdam,theytookoneofhisshirtswiththemandtookphotosofitalongtheway,whichtheysenttohim.

AfewdayspassedandAdamwasfeelingbetter.Thedoctorsclearedhimtoreturntothebackcountry!

Finally,Adamfinishedthetrekwithhiscrew.HeisnowoneoftheonlyBoyScoutswithhemophiliatohaveeverparticipatedinandcompletedaPhilmontTrek.
