It’snotoftenthatakidgrowingupinsmall-townNewMexicostrikesupapassionforChinesecivilization.Nevertheless,myinterestindifferentculturesflourishedduringmychildhoodandadolescenceinNewMexico.ThebeautyandbreathtakinglysceniclandscapeofthisstateisenrichedwiththepronouncedculturaldiversitybroughtaboutbyPueblo,HopiandNavajonationsandalargeHispanicpopulationthatrepresentscloseto50%ofstate.WhenIwasinkindergartenIattendedabilingualschoolinLemitar,asmalltowninsouthernNewMexico.MostofthechildrenatthisschoolwereHispanic.Thisallowedmeataveryearlyagetoexperiencealanguageandculturedifferentfrommine.Myfatherhasalwayshadakeeninterestinpeoplefromothercountriesandculturalbackgrounds.Asalibrarian,myfatherhasalways

encouragedmetoreadnotonlyWesternPhilosophy,butEasternPhilosophyas

well.Inaddition,heinspiredmetoseelifefromadifferentperspective.

Toalargeextent,andbymostdefinitions,Ihavealwaysbeenanon-traditionalandunconventionalstudent.Iwenttoahighschoolwithacurriculumt

hatwasaschallengingformeasanycourseIhavetakenincollege.Thishi

ghschoolwasuniquebecausewestudiedeverythingfromtheoriginofWesternCivilizationtomodern-dayWesternthought.Anotheruniquefeatureofthis

schoolwasthatattheendofoursenioryearwehadtogiveanoralpresentationinfrontofahostofpanelistsfromSt.John’sCollegeinSantaFe,NewMexico.Thisexperiencehelpedmedevelopmyabilitytothinkcriticallyandpresentacogentthesis.Itforcedmetogrownotonlyasastudent,butmoreimportantly,asanindividual.WhenIgraduatedfromhighschoolIrebelledagainsttraditionaleducationanddecidednottoapplytocollege.Thisdecisionwastothegreatdismayofmyparents,whohadenteredcollegeimmediatelyafterhighschool.Withmuchresistance,IenrolledatSantaFeCommunityCollege.Thiswasjusttosatisfymyparents’wishes,andIspentonlyonesemesterthere.AlthoughIwantedtostudyandcontinuetolearn,Iyearnedtoreachouttopeopleandfindadifferentmodeofstudy--onewhic

hwouldallowmetounderstandmyselfbettersothatIcouldrelatebettert

otheworldaroundme.Withthisgoal,IdecidedtoattendtheNewMexicoAca

demyofMassageandAdvancedHealingArts.Theschoolprovidedmewithauni

quemind/bodybalancethathashelpedmebecomeamorewell-roundedperson.

IstudiedsubjectsthatrangedfromAnatomyandPhysiologytoYogaandTaiC

hi.Aftergraduating,IgotajobattheSantaFeSportMedicineInstitutea

saPhysicalTherapyAssistant.IusedMassagetechniquestohelppeoplewho

wereinjuredinautoaccidentsorsportingevents.Thistypeofworkallowe

dmetodirectlyhelppeople--thepeopleImassagedtoldmethatthepain

theyexperiencedpriortothemassagehadsubsided.Relievingthepainsoft

hesepeoplenurturedinmeasenseofpurpose.Inaddition,itincreasedmy

interestinEasternPhilosophy,makingmewanttolearnmoreaboutAsia.Ibe

gantoreadmanyclassicalChinesetextstofurthermyknowledgeaboutChine

sePhilosophy.SoonIdevelopedaprofoundinterestinlearninghowtoread

andspeaktheChineselanguage.TheopportunitiesforstudyingChinesewere

andChina.WhenIarrivedinTaiwan,Iremembergettingofftheairplaneand

hearingeveryonespeakingChinese.EverythingIsawandheardwasunfamilia

rtome.Seeingadifferentworldmadeahugeimpactonme;Icanstillreca

llhowexoticmyenvironmentwas.InTaiwan,IwentthroughanintensiveChi

neselanguageimmersionprogram.SlowlyIbegantofeelmorecomfortableliv

toteachEnglishataprivateschoolforchildren,butItoldtheschoolth
