Whenthefirehappened,peopleinLondonwerealreadystrugglingtosurvivealargeplague(瘟疫)outbreakthathadbegunin1665.London`shousingtroubleswereamajorcauseoftheproblem.Atthetime,

muchofcentralLondonconsistedofcloselypackedandpoorlymadewoodenbuildings.Thiscreatedanunhealthyenvironmentbecausegermstravelledfreelyfromhometohome.Inaddition,thebuildingswereonnarrow,dirtystreetswherepeoplethrewtheirgarbage.Ratswereattractedbythegarbage,andtheybroughtfleas(跳蚤)-thecarriersoftheplague.Oncepeoplecaughttheplaguefromfleabites,thediseasespreadrapidlythroughoutthecityespeciallyinthecrampedcentraldistrict.ItwasintheseterribleconditionsthattheGreatFireragedthroughLondon.
