Althoughfiresarestilladangerineverymajorcitytoday,theywereamuchmoreseriousprobleminearliercenturies.ThehistoricFireofLondonwasaseriousexampleofthedamagefirecancause.

In1666,theGreatFireofLondonburnedoutofcontrolforthreedays,destroyingmostofthecentraldistrict（地区）ofthecity.Thedisastercausedahugeamountofdamage－aroundseventythousandpeoplelosttheirhomes.Atthetime,therewereonlyabouteightythousandlivinginthecity.Therearenoaccuraterecordsofhowmanypeoplediedinthefirebecausetheworstdamagehappenedinpoorneighborhoods.Unfortunately,thegovernmentdidn'trecordthedeathsofpoorpeopleinthoseearlytimes.

Whenthefirehappened,peopleinLondonwerealreadystrugglingtosurvivealargeplague（瘟疫）outbreakthathadbegunin1665.London`shousingtroubleswereamajorcauseoftheproblem.Atthetime,

muchofcentralLondonconsistedofcloselypackedandpoorlymadewoodenbuildings.Thiscreatedanunhealthyenvironmentbecausegermstravelledfreelyfromhometohome.Inaddition,thebuildingswereonnarrow,dirtystreetswherepeoplethrewtheirgarbage.Ratswereattractedbythegarbage,andtheybroughtfleas（跳蚤）－thecarriersoftheplague.Oncepeoplecaughttheplaguefromfleabites,thediseasespreadrapidlythroughoutthecityespeciallyinthecrampedcentraldistrict.ItwasintheseterribleconditionsthattheGreatFireragedthroughLondon.
