Introduction

ThisreportisforassessmentintheInformation&CommunicationsTechnologyinBusiness:

AnIntroductionunitofHigherNationalDiplomaincommunicationsystemandtechnology.

Ingam,CromptonandTravisBuildingSociety,knownasICT,offersarangeofproductsinthefinancialmarketsuchasthecurrentaccounts,savingaccountsandmortgageproducts.Thecompanyhas30branchesthroughoutthecentralbeltofScotland.Thenetworksystemisfarmoreimportantforthecompanyincommunication.

Thisreportwillcompareandevaluatedifferenttypesofnetworksystems,forexample，thebenefitsanddrawbacksamongthreecommunicationnetwork-LAN,WANandINTERNET.Thisreportwillintroducesomecurrentinformationcommunicationtechnologyaswell.Theeffectsoftheseinformationcommunicationnetworkswillbeidentified.

Networksystem

“acommunicationsystemsthatlinkstwoormorecomputersandperipheraldevicesandenabletransferofdatabetweenthecomputers”（BocijP,ChaffeyD,GreasleyA,HickieS:

Networksenablebusinesstooperateeffectivelybylinkingpeopleandinformation:

a.Reducecostwhencomparedtomoretraditionalmethodofcommnicaiton.

b.Thespeedthatinformationisreceivedismuchfasterusingcomputerallovertheworld

c.Enabledistributionandsharingofinformation

d.Orderingcanbedoneonlinemorequickly;theuseofemailasacommunicationtool.

e.Increasedsecurityofdatathatisrestrictedaccessthroughtheuseofpasswordsandthefileservers.

TherearethreenetworksystemsprovidedtoICTCompany:

LocalAreaNetwork（LAN）

Thelocalareanetworkisanetworkwhichconnectscomputerswithinasingleofficeandbuilding.Forexample,agroupofcomputersassociateddevicethatshareacommoncommunicationlineorwirelesslink.

LANserveswithinageographicarealikeanofficeorabuilding.LANcouldreducetheICT’scostbysharingtheresourcesofasingleprocesssuchastheprinter.LANcouldalsomakethestaffsofICTshareeasiersharefiles.ThroughLANsystem,ICTcouldpermiteasierandmorequicklycommunicationwithstaff.

WithusingtheLANsystem,themanagerofICTcoulddoworkeasily.LANnetworkcouldsaveofficeroomstorageoflargeamountofdataforICT.LANmakestheworkofmanagermoreefficientbysavingtimebecauseelectriccopiescanbesenttousers.Additionally,LANallowsmanagermanageinformationeasierwithinthebusiness.Andduetoemail,communicationbetweenmanagerswillbeeasier.

WideAreaNetwork（WAN）

Wideareanetworkisagroupofcomputersanddevicescoveredlargegeographicalareas.Theorganizationscouldbebasedindifferentpartsofacity,adifferentcountryoranywhereintheworld.Internetisagoodexample.WANconnectsmanyLANsingeneral.

WANcouldovercomethecommunicationfarawayformoverdistanceandmakeICTtradewithavirtualmanner.Accessingremotely,ICTcouldsavingtimeincommunicatewithstaff.

AsthemanagementofICT’smanager,theycouldtransferlargevolumesofinformationbetweenbranches.Videoconferencingcouldsavestimeformeetingbetweenmanagersandtheindividual’spositioncouldbelimitedwhenaccesstoinformation.Themanagercouldshareinformationinasecuremanner.

InternetServiceProviders

InternetbelongstoWANandinternetisanetworkofnetworks.Andlinkcomputerssharinginternetprotocol.Thefilesordocumentscouldbeusedinanothercomputerthroughtheinternet.

ICTCompanycouldaccesstolargerangeofexternalinformation,allowuptodateinformationtobeaddressedinstantly.AndICTcouldpermitsconnectwithotherbranchesallovertheworld.

ForthemanagersofICT,theygainaccesstomoreinformationformakinglong-termplanning.Theycangathermoreinformationformarketingresearchoncompetingfinancialproductsandhavecontributiontodevelopmarketingprogramswithspecificallyatparticularcustomers.

NetworkTopology

LinearBusTopology

Asinglecablewithaterminatorateachendisconnectedtoallnodessuchasfileserver,workstation.Thebustopologyusesamulti-dropsystemandallnodesshareacommonbusandonlyonedevicecantransmitatatime.

Theadvantagesoflinearbustopologyareusessimplesystemofwiring,easytoaddtothesystemandwellsuitedfortemporarynetworkswithshortcablelength.Onthecontrary,ifthemaincablebreaks,thenetworkwillfailentirely.Maintenancecostsmaybehigherinthelongterm.

StarTopology

Inthestartopology,thereisacentralhub,andeachnodeisconnecteddirectlytoit.ThehubisthecentralconnectionforallPCsinthenetwork.

Instartopology,itiseasytoaddnewstations,easytoinstall,maintainandmonitor.Itcanusedifferenttypesofwiring.Itisonlytheconnecteddevicewillbeaffectedifthewireisfault.Butthefailureofthehubmeansthatthewholenetworkfailsandlongerlengthsofcablingrequired.

RingTopology

Theringtopologyisaloopsystemwherecomputersandcablingformaring.Eachcomputerconnectedtotheloophasequalstatusandnoparticularnodehasresponsibilityforcontrollingthenetwork.

Theringtopologysuitableforfiberoptics,equalaccessatallstationsandexpandingthesystemdoesnotaffectperformance.However,thisisthemostexpensivetopology.Ifonecomputerfailsitmayaffecttherestanditdifficulttodetectfaults.

TreeTopology

Treetopologyincludesacombinationofboththestarandthebustopology.Itcontainsgroupsofstar-likeworkstationsconnectedtoabusbackbonecable.Hubsareconnectedalongabus.

Thoughtthetreetopologyuspoint-to-pointforeachsection,thelengthofeachsectionislimitedbythetypeofcablingused.Itismoredifficulttoconfigurethanothertypesoftopologyandifbackbonebreaksitaffectsthewholesection.

MeshTopology

Thistypeoftopologyhasdevicestwotypesofmeshtopologies:

Fullmesh-everynodeisconnectedtoeveryothernodewithinthenetwork.

Partialmesh-ischeaperthanfullmesh,withsomenodesconnectedtothefullmeshwhistothersareonlyconnectedtooneortwointhenetwork.

ItisvitalthatthetechnologyissuitableforthebusinessandICTCompanyshouldconsiderallthefollowingfactorstochoose:

Cost,speed,stabilityofsystem,expectedgrowth,distance,existingnetwork,infrastructure,maintenanceandtroubleshootingandinstantion.

NewICTInnovations

Wi-fi

Wi-fimeanswirelessfidelityandusesa2.4GHZbandtotransmitdata.ItbelongstowirelessLAN.Wi-fiislikearadiobroadcastinthatitmakesuserstocatchupwithnetworkconnections.

Withoutcables,Wi-fiisamethodconnectinginternetfast.Wi-fiisfasterthandial–upconnections.Itiseasyandcheaptoinstall.ExceptmakeICTCompanybuildnetworkwithlowcost,itisgreatbenefitICTCompanywhenthecompanyexpandsorchangelayouts.Additionally,Wi-fimakethemanageworkflexiblemanner.

Broadband

Broadbandisahigh-bandwidthinternetconnectionthattransfersordownloadsinformation40timesfasterthanastandardtelephoneandmodem.ItusesADSL（Asymetricdigitalsubscriberline）.

BroadbandcanconvenientICTCompanyasitischeapertorun,thusitiscouldsavecostforICTCompany.Bysavingtimes,BroadbandcouldmakeICT’sbusinessbemoreefficient.ThegreatestbenefitisthatBroadbandcouldbeon24hours,thus,ICTCompanycoulddobusinessinanytimeofthedayifnecessary.Forexample,thecompanycoulddoonlineordering,onlinesalesandonlinefinancialtransactionsinanytime.

VirtualCharacterTechnologies

Virtualcharactertechnologiesare3Dimagesofpersonwhocaninteractonlinewithcomputerusersorcustomers.Thischaracteroperateswithdialupandbroadbandandwillspeakdirectlytocustomers.

ICTCompanycouldusethistechnologyprovidepersonaltouchandcandealingwithvirtualanimatedcharactersinordertoincreasesalesbecausethecustomersprefersocialinteraction.Thistechnologywillhavegreatcontributiononimprovingmarketingandcustomerservice.

ShoppingCartSoftware

Similartoavisittothesupermarket,shoppingcartservicecustomersareabletogoshoppingonlinewithoutleavingtheofficeorhome.Thisisanewmethodtogoshoppingandconvenientbothcustomersandsellers.

ThistechnologycouldmakeICTCompanydobusinessonline.Thecompanycouldsellfinancialserviceonlineandprovidescustomermorepurchaseopportunity.Thisnewshoppingmethodallowsmanagereasilytomonitorthesalesofitsfinancialgoodsatanypurchasestage.

XMLWebServices

XML（ExtendibleMark-upLanguage）isawaytocreatingacommoncomputerlanguageinaformatthatcanbesharedontheinternet,intranetandothersources.ThroughtheuseofMark-upSymbols,itisconvenienttointroducethestandardizationinformation.

TheXMLwebservicecouldhelpICTCompanyproviderapidresponsetocustomerlikethefasterpublishingofinformationtocustomersorsuppliers,thefasterreactiontocustomerneedsandfasterprocessingofordersovertheinternet.

Conclusion

Thisreportintroducesdifferenttypesofnetworksystemwithitsbenefitsanddrawbacks.Accordingtodifferentsituationofthecompany,ICTCompanyshouldchoosedifferentnetworktopology.ICTCompanycoulddobusinessmoreefficientwithnewICTinnovationsuchasWi-fi,ShoppingCartSoftware,XMLWebServicesetc.
