FRANNY

THOUGHbrilliantlysunny,Saturdaymorningwasovercoatweatheragain,notjusttopcoatweather,asithadbeenallweekandaseveryonehadhopeditwouldstayforthebigweekend--theweekendoftheYalegame.Ofthetwenty-someyoungmenwhowerewaitingatthestationfortheirdatestoarriveontheten-fifty-two,nomorethansixorsevenwereoutonthecold,openplatform.Therestwerestandingaroundinhatless,smokylittlegroupsoftwosandthreesandfoursinsidetheheatedwaitingroom,talkinginvoicesthat,almostwithoutexception,soundedcollegiatelydogmatic,asthougheachyoungman,inhisstrident,conversationalturn,wasclearingup,onceandforall,somehighlycontroversialissue,onethattheoutside,non-matriculatingworldhadbeenbungling,provocativelyornot,forcenturies.

LaneCoutell,inaBurberryraincoatthatapparentlyhadawoollinerbuttonedintoit,wasoneofthesixorsevenboysoutontheopenplatform.Or,rather,hewasandhewasn'toneofthem.Fortenminutesormore,hehaddeliberatelybeenstandingjustoutofconversationrangeoftheotherboys,hisbackagainstthefreeChristianScienceliteraturerack,hisunglovedhandsinhiscoatpockets.Hewaswearingamarooncashmeremufflerwhichhadhikeduponhisneck,givinghimnexttonoprotectionagainstthecold.Abruptly,andratherabsently,hetookhisrighthandoutofhiscoatpocketandstartedtoadjustthemuffler,butbeforeitwasadjusted,hechangedhismindandusedthesamehandtoreachinsidehiscoatandtakeoutaletterfromtheinsidepocketofhisjacket.Hebegantoreaditimmediately,withhismouthnotquiteclosed.

Theletterwaswritten--typewritten--onpale-bluenotepaper.Ithadahandled,unfreshlook,asifithadbeentakenoutofitsenvelopeandreadseveraltimesbefore:

Lanehimselflitacigaretteasthetrainpulledin.Then,likesomanypeople,who,perhaps,oughttobeissuedonlyaveryprobationalpasstomeettrains,hetriedtoemptyhisfaceofallexpressionthatmightquitesimply,perhapsevenbeautifully,revealhowhefeltaboutthearrivingperson.

Frannywasamongthefirstofthegirlstogetoffthetrain,fromacaratthefar,northernendoftheplatform.Lanespottedherimmediately,anddespitewhateveritwashewastryingtodowithhisface,hisarmthatshotupintotheairwasthewholetruth.Frannysawit,andhim,andwavedextravagantlyback.Shewaswearingasheared-raccooncoat,andLane,walkingtowardherquicklybutwithaslowface,reasonedtohimself,withsuppressedexcitement,thathewastheonlyoneontheplatformwhoreallyknewFranny'scoat.Herememberedthatonce,inaborrowedcar,afterkissingFrannyforahalfhourorso,hehadkissedhercoatlapel,asthoughitwereaperfectlydesirable,organicextensionofthepersonherself.
