(颐和园的兴建历史)Thesummerpalacewasfirststartedin1750duringthegoldenageoftheQingdynasty.Atthattime,Chinahasvastterritoriesandgreatpower.ThereigningemperorofthetimewasEmperorQianlong,the4themperoroftheQingdynasty.RelyingonhisdeepunderstandingofChineseancientgarden,hissupremepowerandthebrimmingnationalcoffers,hedecidedtobuildagardeninwestBeijing“tofacilitateirrigationandtocelebratehismother’sbirthday”.HepickedupanideallocationatthefootoftheYanshanmountainstobuildthismostexquisitegarden.HeborrowedalltheexcellentgardeningtechniquesfromclassicalChinesegardens,inheritedalltheachievementsofalltheimperialgardens,andgatheredalargenumberofthecraftsmenandartists.Theprojectlastedatotalof15yearsandthegardenwasfirstnamedQingyiYuan,thegardenofClearRipples.ItrepresentedtheultimateachievementofChinesegardenculture.However,unfortunately,in1860,thegardenofClearRipples,togetherwithYuanmingYuan,wasravagedandburntdownbytheinvadingAnglo-FrenchAlliedForce.In1888,EmpressDowagerCiXiorderedtorebuildthispalaceontheremainsoftheClearRippleGardenandrenameditYiheYuan,knownbetterasthesummerpalacetoday.Thesummerpalaceisthelargestandbestreservedimperialgardenintheworldtodayandcarriesrichculturalconnotation.Itisknownasthemuseumofimperialgardens.In1998,theSummerPalacewasinscribedintheWorldCultureHeritageListbyUNESCOandwasrecognizedtorepresentorientalgardenculture.

(仁寿殿)ThisspacioushalliscalledRenshouDian,theHallofBenevolenceandLongevity.Itusedtobethegovernmentcenterinthesummerpalace.Itwasfirstbuiltin1750andnamedQinzhengDian,HallofDiligentGovernment.EmperorQianlongsetarulethatalltheaudiencehallshouldbenamedQinzhengDianinordertoremindalltheemperorstobediligentintheirwork.EmperorJiaqing,asonofEmperorQianlong,oncesaidinoneofhisarticles“OnDiligentGovernment”:
“whentheemperorisdiligent,thecountryiswellruled,whereasiftheemperorisslack,thecoumtrywillbeindanger.”Sodiligentgovernmentplaysanimportantroleinthedestinyofthewholecountry.Whenthesummerwasrebuiltafterthebigfire,empressdowagerCixirenameditRenshouDian,HallofBenevolenceandLongevity.Thisnamecamefromthesentence“RenZheshou”inTheAnalectsofConfuciustosingifythatthebenevolentrulerswillenjoyalonglife.Cixi’sgreathopewaseverlastinglife,therefore,manydecorationswereaddedinthishalltosymbolizelongevity.Nowlet’slookupatthegraytilesontheroof.Attheendofeachtile,thereisaChinesecharacter“Shou”whichmeanslongevity.Thereare412oftheminall.Pleaselookthisway.UnderthebigplaquehangingontopofthethronewasamirrorscreeninscribedwiththeChinesecharacter“Shou”.Thereare226suchcharactersalltogether.Look,thereisahugecalligraphyscrollhangingfromthewallfacingthegate.ThereareabigChinesecharacterShouwrittenonit,surroundedby100bats,whichsignifygreatfortuneandhappiness.ItissaidthebigcharacteriswrittenbyEmpressDowagerCixi.SowemaylearnthatCixiusedhundredsofShoucharactersinoraboutthisbuildingtoexpressherdesireforlongevity.
