Thestudies,publishedinthelatestissueofPsychologicalScience,foundthatsaying“thankyou”strengthensrelationshipsbycausingthepersonexpressingthankstofeelmoreresponsiblefortherecipient’swelfare.
Inonestudy,137collegestudentscompletedasurveyregardinghowoftentheyexpressedgratitudetoafriendorpartner.Resultsshowedthatgratitudewaspositivelylinkedwiththeperson’sperceptionofthe“communal”strength.
Inanotherstudyinvolving218collegestudents,expressinggratitudefoundtheexpresser’sperceptionoftherelationship’sstrengthovertimewasboosted.

Hesaidthefindingsmakesensebecause“whenyouexpressgratitudetosomeone,youarefocusingonthegoodthingsthatpersonhasdoneforyou,”hesaid.“Itmakesyouseetheminamorepositivelightandhelpsyoutofocusontheirgoodtraits.”
Lambertsaidhisresearchteamtestedtheideathat:
