Thestudies,publishedinthelatestissueofPsychologicalScience,foundthatsaying“thankyou”strengthensrelationshipsbycausingthepersonexpressingthankstofeelmoreresponsiblefortherecipient’swelfare.

Inonestudy,137collegestudentscompletedasurveyregardinghowoftentheyexpressedgratitudetoafriendorpartner.Resultsshowedthatgratitudewaspositivelylinkedwiththeperson’sperceptionofthe“communal”strength.

Inanotherstudyinvolving218collegestudents,expressinggratitudefoundtheexpresser’sperceptionoftherelationship’sstrengthovertimewasboosted.

Inthethirdstudy,75menandwomenwererandomlyassignedtooneoffourgroups.Overathree-weekperiod,onegroupexpressedgratitudetoafriend;anotherthoughtgratefulthoughtsaboutafriend,whileathirdthoughtaboutdailyactivitiesandafourthhadpositiveinteractionswithafriend.

Thosewhoexpressedgratitudereportedstrongerrelationshipsattheendofstudythanthoseintheothergroups.

Gratitude,whenexpressed,boostedcommunalstrength,accordingtothestudy’sleadauthor,NathanielLambert,aresearchassociateattheUniversity.

Hesaidthefindingsmakesensebecause“whenyouexpressgratitudetosomeone,youarefocusingonthegoodthingsthatpersonhasdoneforyou,”hesaid.“Itmakesyouseetheminamorepositivelightandhelpsyoutofocusontheirgoodtraits.”

Lambertsaidhisresearchteamtestedtheideathat:

“Thepersondoingthethankingcomestoperceivetherelationshipasmorecommunal,toseethepersonasmoreworthwhiletomakeasacrificefor,togotheextramiletohelpout”.
