Thestudylookedatfacialrecognitionsystemsalreadyinusebeforethepandemic.Italsolookedatsystemsspeciallydevelopedtoworkonmaskedfaces.TheNISTsaiditprocessedatotalof6.2millionimagesfortheexperimentPeopleintheimageswerenotactuallywearingmasks.So,theresearchersdigitallyaddeddifferentmaskshapestofacesinthepicturesforuseinthestudy.Insomecases,upto70percentofaperson’sfacewascoveredintheimages.Overall,theresearchshowsthetop-performingfacialrecognitionsystemsfailtocorrectlyidentifyunmaskedindividualsabout0.3percentofthetimeandthefailureraterosetoabout5percentwithmaskedimages.Manyofthelowerperformingalgorithms,however,hadmuchhighererrorrateswithmaskedimages—ashighas20to50percent.
