Thisyear,theWorldWideWebhasturned25yearsold.Whatmanypeopledon’tknowisthatthewebwasatfirstcreatedtoimprovecommunicationbetweenthousandsofscientistsinSwitzerland.

In1989,TimBerners-Leewasa34-year-oldBritishphysicistworkingasasoftwareengineeratCERN,theEuropeanOrganizationforNuclearResearchinSwitzerland.SinceCERNwasahugeorganizationwiththousandsofscientists,communicationbetweenthemwasbecomingincreasinglydifficult.

Berners-Leewantedtodevelopasystemtosolvetheproblem. Hispapersuggestedaninformationsystem,whereapageononecomputercouldhavealinktoanotherpageonanothercomputer(connectedthroughtheInternet),allowingscientiststoreadlotsofinformationquickly.However,Berners-Lee’sbosssaidthatitsoundedexcitingbutimpossible.

Eventhoughthereweremanydifficultiesandfewsupporters,Berners-LeewentontodeveloptheWorldWideWeb.HecameupwithideassuchasHyper-textTransferProtocol(超文本传输协议)toallowcomputerstotalktoeachother,Hyper-textMarkupLanguage(HTML)tocreatethepages,aservertoservethepages,andabrowser(浏览器)toseethem. 

InDecember1990,theWorldWideWebwasdemonstrated(展示)andin1991,theWWWprojectwasmadepublic,sothatotherprogrammerscoulddeveloptheirownbrowsers.Berners-Leebelievedthatitcouldbeusedformorethanscientificpurposes.HewantedtheInternettobeeasyforanyonetouse—afreeopensoftware.Hiswishessooncametrue.
