Butfirst,wetellaboutsomeolderAmericanswhoaresingingfortheirhealth.

Overtenyearsago,America’sNationalEndowmentfortheArtsbegantostudycreativityandaging.TheNEA,theNationalInstitutesofHealthandfourotherprogramslaunchedtheCreativityandAgingstudy.Itexaminedtheeffectofparticipatoryartprogramsonthephysicalandmentalhealthofolderindividuals.

Thestudytookplaceinthreepartsofthecountry,includingWashington,DC.MorethanonehundredolderadultsfromtheWashingtonareaweretaughttosingandperformtogether.Theywerecomparedtoacontrolgroupofindividualswhodidnotsing.

JeanneKellydirectedthesingingprogram.Shesaysthestudyfoundthatthoseworkingwithherwerehappierandsufferedlessfromdepressionthantheinactiveadults.Thesingersalsotookfewermedicinesandvisitedthedoctorless.Andtheyhadfewerfallsbecausetheirbodieswerestrengthened.

WhatbeganasastudyhasgrownintotheEncoreCreativityforOlderAdultsprogram.Currently,theprogramhasmorethanfivehundredfiftyparticipants.Theaverageageisseventy-three,butsomeoftheindividualsareninetyyearsoldorolder.

TherearenowelevenchoralgroupsintheWashingtonareaandoneinOhio.Membersdonothavetoprovetheirsingingability,andnoexperienceisnecessary.JeanneKellytalksabouttheprogram.

“Oursingers,someofthemhavesungtheirentirelife.Somehaven’tsungfor40years,becausethey’vebeenbusywithacareer,they’vebeenbusyraisingfamilies.Andthensomehaveneversung.”

Theelevengroupsallstudythesamesong,whichmakesiteasyduringwhenaperformancedatenears.Theycanbecombinedintoalargerchorusifthetheaterorconcerthallisverylarge.Aftertheconcertseason,JeanneKellydirectstwosummerprogramsinNewYorkandMaryland.Singershaveonlyfourdaystolearnfivesongsbeforetheyperforminpublic.

Eighty-twoyearoldJeanneHeatherhasattendedthesummerprograms.Sheexplainswhyshewent.

JEANNEHEATHER:

“Becauseit’sfunandbecauseIlearnsomanythings.Theyteachushere,notonlyaboutthemusic,buthowtosing,andhowtosingbetter.Andtheydon’treallygetmadifyoumissanote.”

SeventyfouryearoldMargoNewhousejoinedEncorelastyear.Shesaystheprogramwasveryhelpfulwhensherecoveredfromafall.

TheCreativityandAgingstudymayhaveendedyearsago,butthechoralgroupsthatwerestudiedhavecontinuedandexpanded.I’mFaithLapidus.

AmericanOlympianKylaRossHeadstotheOlympics

JUNESIMMS:

Fifteen-year-oldKylaRossofCaliforniaistheyoungestmemberoftheAmericanOlympicgymnasticsteam.Shesaysthatgoingtothetwenty-twelveSummerGamesislikeadreamcometrue.But,aswehearfromBobDoughty,gettingtoLondonmeansshehashadtoworkharderthanmostgirlsherage.

BOBDOUGHTY:

KylaRossdoesnotlivethelifeofanaverageteenagegirl.Shespendsthirtytothirty-fivehoursaweektrainingattheGym-MaxAcademyofGymnastics,southofLosAngeles.Shegoestoschoolonlypart-time.

KLYAROSS:

“Ofcourse,it’salwayshardtofitinhomework,especiallythisyear.Ihadtocutbackonalotofschool.Itsortoffeelsunreal.Imean,I’vebeenworkingfortheOlympicsallmylife,andit’ssomethingthatI’vebeentrainingfor.Sotobeabletosaythatissuchadreamcometrue.”

KylaRosshasstayedinschoolsothatshecanfinishherstudiesandgraduateinfouryears.Herfather,JasonRoss,saysithasnotbeeneasy.

JASONROSS:

“Youhavetobeaverydisciplinedperson.Imeanfrompracticetogoingstraighttodoyourhomework.Youmightwanttorestor,disciplinedinthefactthatohyouwanttohangoutwithyourfriends,andpeoplearegoingout.Butyouhavetostayhomeandfinishyourhomeworkorgetrestbecauseyouhaveacompetition.So(it)definitelytakesalotofdiscipline.”

KylaRoss’strainingcoach,JennyLiang,saysittakesdisciplineofadifferentkindtodealwiththepressureattheOlympics.ShesaysthebiggestissueattheOlympicGameswillbeintheyounggymnast’sownmind.Mrs.Liangsayshermindhastobeevenstronger.Shehastothink,‘I’vepracticedthisonethousandtimesbefore.It’sjustchangingthevenue.’Thegymnasticcoachsaysifyouthinktoomuch,youcannotdoanything.”

JennyLiangandherhusbandHowiehavecoachedKylaforthepastsevenyears.TheymetinChinaasgymnastsfortheChineseNationalTeam.TheylatermovedtotheUnitedStates,wheretheyopenedtheGym-MaxAcademyofGymnastics.

KylaRosswasborninHawaii.Herparentsputherinagymnasticsclasswhenshewasthreeyearsoldtohelpherburnoffenergy.JasonRosssaysheneverexpectedhisdaughtertocompeteattheOlympics.

“Youjustrecollectonallthetimes,youdroppedheroff(at)practices,(the)tostrugglesshe’shad,alsothetimeshe’sinvestedinto(gymnastics),andjustthegratifyingfeelingthatsheachievedhergoalandreallyputalotofworkintoit,andit’sactuallyhappened…”

“Fromthisexperience,it’sdefinitebeenareallylongjourneyandasmydadtellsme,‘Youalwayshavetoenjoythemoment.’IdefinitelywanttohavefunwhenIgotoLondonandenjoybeingwiththeteamcompeting,andhopefullyrepresentingTeamUSAaswellaswecan.”

TheUnitedStateswomen’sgymnasticsteamwonitsfirstevergoldmedalatthe1996SummerOlympics.ThatisthesameyearKylaRosswasborn.Maybethisyearshecanhelpthewomen’steambringhomeanothergold.KylaRosswillbetrainingwithherfourteammembersinTexasbeforeflyingofftoLondonfortheSummerGames.I’mBobDoughty.

JohnMayerReturnsWithShadowDays

JohnMayerseemstohitalltherightnoteswhenhesings.But,thesingerhasbeenknowntomissthemarkmorethanafewtimeswhenheopenshismouthtospeak.HemadenewsafewyearsagoafterspeakingwithPlayboymagazineaboutformergirlfriendsJessicaSimpsonandJenniferAniston.Healsomadesomenotsonicecommentsaboutblackwomen.

“ShadowDays”isthefirstreleasefromJohnMayer’slatestCD,“BornandRaised.”Itisthefifthstudioalbumfromthesinger,songwriterandmusician.ItalsoishisthirdalbumtoreachnumberoneonBillboard’sTop200Albumschart.AnditishisfirstreleasesincehisPlayboycommentsmadenewsheadlinestwoyearsago.

Recently,heexplainedthosecommentsasafailedattempttomakehimselfsoundmoreexciting.Whilenotactuallyapologizingforwhathesaid,hedidseemtoexpresssomesenseofregret.ThesamecanbesaidofhislatestCD.

Onthesong“ShadowDays,”JohnMayersings“itsuckstobehonestandithurtstobereal.”Healsosayshis“shadowdaysareovernow,”andgoesontodeclarehimselfa“goodmanwithagoodheart.”
