Althoughfiresarestilladangerineverymajorcitytoday,theywereamuchmoreseriousprobleminearliercenturies.ThehistoricFireofLondonwasaseriousexampleofthedamagefirecancause.

Finally,however,thisdisasteralsopositivelyaffectedthecity.

In1666,theGreatFireofLondonburnedoutofcontrolforthreedays,destroyingmostofthecentraldistrictofthecity.Thedisastercausedahugeamountofdamage-aroundseventythousandpeoplelosttheirhomes.Atthetime,therewereonlyabouteightythousandlivinginthecity.Therearenoaccuraterecordsofhowmanypeoplediedinthefirebecausetheworstdamagehappenedinpoorneighborhoods.Unfortunately,thegovernmentdidn'trecordthedeathsofpoorpeopleinthoseearlytimes.

Whenthefirehappened,peopleinLondonwerealreadystrugglingtosurvivealargeplague(瘟疫)outbreakthathadbegunin1665.London’shousingtroubleswereamajorcauseoftheproblem.Atthetime,muchofcentralLondonconsistedofcloselypackedandpoorlymadewoodenbuildings.Thiscreatedanunhealthyenvironmentbecausegermstravelledfreelyfromhometohome.Inaddition,thebuildingswereonnarrow,dirtystreetswherepeoplethrewtheirgarbage.Ratswereattractedbythegarbage,andtheybroughtfleas(跳蚤)-thecarriersoftheplague.Oncepeoplecaughttheplaguefromfleabites,thediseasespreadrapidlythroughoutthecityespeciallyinthecrampedcentraldistrict.ItwasintheseterribleconditionsthattheGreatFireragedthroughLondon.

Despitethedamage,thefirehadapositiveeffectbecauseitdestroyedtheold,poorlymadewoodenbuildings.Italsokilledmostoftheratsandfleas,whichslowedthespreadoftheplague.Afterthefire,thegovernmentrebuiltthedamagedareas.Wheneverpossible
