Althoughfiresarestilladangerineverymajorcitytoday,theywereamuchmoreseriousprobleminearliercenturies.ThehistoricFireofLondonwasaseriousexampleofthedamagefirecancause.
Finally,however,thisdisasteralsopositivelyaffectedthecity.
In1666,theGreatFireofLondonburnedoutofcontrolforthreedays,destroyingmostofthecentraldistrictofthecity.Thedisastercausedahugeamountofdamage－aroundseventythousandpeoplelosttheirhomes.Atthetime,therewereonlyabouteightythousandlivinginthecity.Therearenoaccuraterecordsofhowmanypeoplediedinthefirebecausetheworstdamagehappenedinpoorneighborhoods.Unfortunately,thegovernmentdidn'trecordthedeathsofpoorpeopleinthoseearlytimes.
Whenthefirehappened,peopleinLondonwerealreadystrugglingtosurvivealargeplague（瘟疫）outbreakthathadbegunin1665.London’shousingtroubleswereamajorcauseoftheproblem.Atthetime,muchofcentralLondonconsistedofcloselypackedandpoorlymadewoodenbuildings.Thiscreatedanunhealthyenvironmentbecausegermstravelledfreelyfromhometohome.Inaddition,thebuildingswereonnarrow,dirtystreetswherepeoplethrewtheirgarbage.Ratswereattractedbythegarbage,andtheybroughtfleas（跳蚤）－thecarriersoftheplague.Oncepeoplecaughttheplaguefromfleabites,thediseasespreadrapidlythroughoutthecityespeciallyinthecrampedcentraldistrict.ItwasintheseterribleconditionsthattheGreatFireragedthroughLondon.
Despitethedamage,thefirehadapositiveeffectbecauseitdestroyedtheold,poorlymadewoodenbuildings.Italsokilledmostoftheratsandfleas,whichslowedthespreadoftheplague.Afterthefire,thegovernmentrebuiltthedamagedareas.Wheneverpossible
