OverthepastfewyearsasFirstLady,Ihavehadtheextraordinaryprivilegeoftravelingallacrossthiscountry.

AndeverywhereI'vegone,inthepeopleI'vemet,andthestoriesI'veheard,IhaveseentheverybestoftheAmericanspirit.

Ihaveseenitintheincrediblekindnessandwarmththatpeoplehaveshownmeandmyfamily,especiallyourgirls.

I'veseenitinteachersinanear-bankrupt（濒临破产）schooldistrictwhovowed（发誓）tokeepteachingwithoutpay.

I'veseenitinpeoplewhobecomeheroesatamoment'snotice,divingintoharm'swaytosaveothers…flyingacrossthecountrytoputoutafire…drivingforhourstobailout（摆脱困境）afloodedtown.

AndI'veseenitinourmenandwomeninuniformandourproudmilitaryfamilies…inwoundedwarriorswhotellmethey'renotjustgoingtowalkagain,they'regoingtorun,andthey'regoingtorunmarathons（马拉松）…intheyoungmanblindedbyabombinAfghanistanwhosaid,simply,"…I'dgivemyeyes100timesagaintohavethechancetodowhatIhavedoneandwhatIcanstilldo."

Everyday,thepeopleImeetinspireme…everyday,theymakemeproud…everydaytheyremindmehowblessedwearetoliveinthegreatestnationonearth.

ServingasyourFirstLadyisanhonorandaprivilege…butbackwhenwefirstcametogetherfouryearsago,Istillhadsomeconcernsaboutthisjourneywe'dbegun.

WhileIbelieveddeeplyinmyhusband'svisionforthiscountry…andIwascertainhewouldmakeanextraordinaryPresident…likeanymother,Iwasworriedaboutwhatitwouldmeanforourgirlsifhegotthatchance.

Howwouldwekeepthemgroundedundertheglareofthenationalspotlight?

Howwouldtheyfeelbeinguprootedfromtheirschool,theirfriends,andtheonlyhomethey'deverknown?

OurlifebeforemovingtoWashingtonwasfilledwithsimplejoys…Saturdaysatsoccergames,Sundaysatgrandma'shouse…andadatenight（约会之夜）forBarackandmewaseitherdinneroramovie,becauseasanexhaustedmom,Icouldn'tstayawakeforboth.

Andthetruthis,Ilovedthelifewehadbuiltforourgirls…IdeeplylovedthemanIhadbuiltthatlifewith…andIdidn'twantthattochangeifhebecamePresident.

IlovedBarackjustthewayhewas.

Yousee,eventhoughbackthenBarackwasaSenatorandapresidentialcandidate…tome,hewasstilltheguywho'dpickedmeupforourdatesinacarthatwassorustedout,Icouldactuallyseethepavementgoingbythroughaholeinthepassengersidedoor…hewastheguywhoseproudestpossessionwasacoffeetablehe'dfoundinadumpster（垃圾箱）,andwhoseonlypairofdecent（得体的）shoeswashalfasizetoosmall.

ButwhenBarackstartedtellingmeabouthisfamily–that'swhenIknewIhadfoundakindredspirit（志趣相投）,someonewhosevaluesandupbringing（教养）weresomuchlikemine.

Yousee,BarackandIwerebothraisedbyfamilieswhodidn'thavemuchinthewayofmoneyormaterialpossessionsbutwhohadgivenussomethingfarmorevaluable–theirunconditionallove,theirunflinching（坚定不移的）sacrifice,andthechancetogoplacestheyhadneverimaginedforthemselves.

Myfatherwasapumpoperatoratthecitywaterplant,andhewasdiagnosedwithMultipleSclerosiswhenmybrotherandIwereyoung.

Andevenasakid,Iknewtherewereplentyofdayswhenhewasinpain…Iknewtherewereplentyofmorningswhenitwasastruggleforhimtosimplygetoutofbed.

Buteverymorning,Iwatchedmyfatherwakeupwithasmile,grabhiswalker,prophimselfupagainstthebathroomsink,andslowlyshaveandbuttonhisuniform.

Andwhenhereturnedhomeafteralongday'swork,mybrotherandIwouldstandatthetopofthestairstoourlittleapartment,patientlywaitingtogreethim…watchingashereacheddowntoliftoneleg,andthentheother,toslowlyclimbhiswayintoourarms.

Butdespitethesechallenges,mydadhardlyevermissedadayofwork…heandmymomweredeterminedtogivemeandmybrotherthekindofeducationtheycouldonlydreamof.

AndwhenmybrotherandIfinallymadeittocollege,nearlyallofourtuitioncamefromstudentloansandgrants.

Butmydadstillhadtopayatinyportionofthattuitionhimself.

Andeverysemester,hewasdeterminedtopaythatbillrightontime,eventakingoutloanswhenhefellshort.

Hewassoproudtobesendinghiskidstocollege…andhemadesurewenevermissedaregistrationdeadlinebecausehischeckwaslate.

Yousee,formydad,that'swhatitmeanttobeaman.

Likesomanyofus,thatwasthemeasureofhissuccessinlife–beingabletoearnadecent（大方的,得体的）livingthatallowedhimtosupporthisfamily.

AndasIgottoknowBarack,Irealizedthateventhoughhe'dgrownupallthewayacrossthecountry,he'dbeenbroughtupjustlikeme.

Barackwasraisedbyasinglemotherwhostruggledtopaythebills,andbygrandparentswhosteppedinwhensheneededhelp.

Barack'sgrandmotherstartedoutasasecretaryatacommunitybank…andshemovedquicklyuptheranks…butlikesomanywomen,shehitaglassceiling.

Andforyears,mennomorequalifiedthanshewas–menshehadactuallytrained–werepromoteduptheladderaheadofher,earningmoreandmoremoneywhileBarack'sfamilycontinuedtoscrapeby.

Butdayafterday,shekeptonwakingupatdawntocatchthebus…arrivingatworkbeforeanyoneelse…givingherbestwithoutcomplaintorregret.

AndshewouldoftentellBarack,"Solongasyoukidsdowell,Bar,that'sallthatreallymatters."

LikesomanyAmericanfamilies,ourfamiliesweren'taskingformuch.

Theydidn'tbegrudge[be·grudge|羡慕;嫉妒]anyoneelse'ssuccessorcarethatothershadmuchmorethantheydid...infact,theyadmiredit.

TheysimplybelievedinthatfundamentalAmericanpromisethat,evenifyoudon'tstartoutwithmuch,ifyouworkhardanddowhatyou'resupposedtodo,andthenyoushouldbeabletobuildadecentlifeforyourselfandanevenbetterlifeforyourkidsandgrandkids.

That'showtheyraisedus…thatarewhatwelearnedfromtheirexample.

Welearnedaboutdignity[尊严]anddecency–thathowhardyouworkmattersmorethanhowmuchyoumake…thathelpingothersmeansmorethanjustgettingaheadyourself.

Welearnedabouthonestyandintegrity–thatthetruthmatters…thatyoudon'ttakeshortcuts[走捷径]orplaybyyourownsetofrules[自以为是]…andsuccessdoesn'tcountunlessyouearnitfairandsquare.

Welearnedaboutgratitudeandhumility–thatsomanypeoplehadahandinoursuccess,fromtheteacherswhoinspiredustothejanitorswhokeptourschoolclean…andweweretaughttovalueeveryone'scontributionandtreateveryonewithrespect.

ThosearethevaluesBarackandI–andsomanyofyou–aretryingtopassontoourownchildren.

That'swhoweare.

Andstandingbeforeyoufouryearsago,IknewthatIdidn'twantanyofthattochangeifBarackbecamePresident.

Well,today,aftersomanystrugglesandtriumphsandmomentsthathavetestedmyhusbandinwaysInevercouldhaveimagined,Ihaveseenfirsthandthatbeingpresidentdoesn'tchangewhoyouare–itrevealswhoyouare.

Yousee,I'vegottentoseeupcloseandpersonalwhatbeingpresidentreallylookslike.

AndI'veseenhowtheissuesthatcomeacrossaPresident'sdeskarealwaysthehardones–theproblemswherenoamountofdataornumberswillgetyoutotherightanswer…thejudgmentcallswherethestakesaresohigh,andthereisnomarginforerror.

AndasPresident,youcangetallkindsofadvicefromallkindsofpeople.

Butattheendoftheday,whenitcomestimetomakethatdecision,asPresident,allyouhavetoguideyouareyourvalues,andyourvision,andthelifeexperiencesthatmakeyouwhoyouare.

Sowhenitcomestorebuildingoureconomy,Barackisthinkingaboutfolkslikemydadandlikehisgrandmother.

He'sthinkingaboutthepridethatcomesfromahardday'swork.

That'swhyhesignedtheLillyLedbetterFairPayActtohelpwomengetequalpayforequalwork.

That'swhyhecuttaxesforworkingfamiliesandsmallbusinessesandfoughttogettheautoindustrybackonitsfeet.

That'showhebroughtoureconomyfromthebrinkofcollapsetocreatingjobsagain–jobsyoucanraiseafamilyon,goodjobsrighthereintheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

Whenitcomestothehealthofourfamilies,Barackrefusedtolistentoallthosefolkswhotoldhimtoleavehealthreformforanotherday,anotherpresident.

Hedidn'tcarewhetheritwastheeasythingtodopolitically–that'snothowhewasraised–hecaredthatitwastherightthingtodo.

HediditbecausehebelievesthathereinAmerica,ourgrandparentsshouldbeabletoaffordtheirmedicine…ourkidsshouldbeabletoseeadoctorwhenthey'resick…andnooneinthiscountryshouldevergobrokebecauseofanaccidentorillness.

Andhebelievesthatwomenaremorethancapableofmakingourownchoicesaboutourbodiesandourhealthcare…that'swhatmyhusbandstandsfor.

Whenitcomestogivingourkidstheeducationtheydeserve,Barackknowsthatlikemeandlikesomanyofyou,henevercould'veattendedcollegewithoutfinancialaid.

Andbelieveitornot,whenwewerefirstmarried,ourcombinedmonthlystudentloanbillswereactuallyhigherthanourmortgage.

Weweresoyoung,soinlove,andsoindebt.

That'swhyBarackhasfoughtsohardtoincreasestudentaidandkeepinterestratesdown,becausehewantseveryyoungpersontofulfilltheirpromiseandbeabletoattendcollege
