Abstract

TheviscosityanddensityofCJO(crudeJatrophaoil)werereducedbyheatingitusingtheheatfromexhaustgasofadieselenginewithanappropriatelydesignedhelicalcoilheatexchanger.ExperimentswereconductedtoevaluatethecombustioncharacteristicsofaDI(directinjection)dieselengineusingPJO(preheatedJatrophaoil).Itexhibitedamarginallyhighercylindergaspressure,rateofpressureriseandheatreleaserateascomparedtoHSD(highspeeddiesel)duringtheinitialstagesofcombustionforallengineloadings.IgnitiondelaywasshorterforPJOascomparedtoHSD.TheresultsalsoindicatedthatBSFC(brakespecificfuelconsumption)andEGT(exhaustgastemperature)increasedwhileBTE(brakethermalefficiency)decreasedwithPJOascomparedtoHSDforallengineloadings.ThereductionsinCO2 (carbondioxide),HC(hydrocarbon)andNOx(nitrousoxide)emissionswereobservedforPJOalongwithincreasedCO(carbonmonoxide)emissionascomparedtothoseofHSD.

1.Introduction

Therapiddepletionofconventionalfuelandfluctuationofdieselpriceintheglobalmarkethavepromotedresearchforalternativefuelsfordieselengine.Amongthedifferentalternativefuels,vegetableoilhavingfuelpropertiessimilartodieselhasanacceptableengineperformanceforshort-termoperationonly [1].However,longtermendurancetestswithvegetableoilreportedsomeenginedurabilityissuessuchassevereenginedeposits,pistonringsticking,injectorchoking,gumformationandlubricatingoilthickening [2].Theseproblemsareprimarilyattributedtohighviscosityandpoorvolatilityofstraightvegetableoilsduetolargemolecularweightandbulkymolecularstructure.Higherviscosityofvegetableoil(30–200 cStat40 °C)ascomparedtomineraldiesel(4 cStat40 °C)leadstounsuitablepumpingandfuelspraycharacteristics.Forlongrunning,straightvegetableoilsarenotsuitableasfuelsfordieselengines,theyhavetobemodifiedtobringtheircombustionrelatedpropertiesclosertodiesel.Undoubtedly,transesterificationiswellacceptedandbestsuitedmethodofutilizingvegetableoilsinCI(compressionignition)enginebutthisaddsextracostofprocessingbecauseofthetransesterificationreactioninvolvingchemicalandprocessheatinputs.Theotheralternativecouldbeuseofheatedvegetableoilsaspetroleumfuelsubstitute.Further,heatingofoilusingexhaustgasfromadieselengineisanattractiveproposition.

TheviscosityofJatrophaoilwasdecreasedremarkablywithincreaseintemperatureanditbecameclosetodieselattemperatureabove75 °C [3].ThedensityofJatrophaoilwasreducedfrom900.21 kg/m3 to883.97 kg/m3 byraisingthetemperatureofoilfrom15 °Cto90 °C [4].HeatingtheJatrophaoilbetween90 °Cand100 °Cwasadequatetobringdowntheviscosityincloserangetodiesel [5].Chauhanetal. [6] reducedtheviscosityofoilbyheatingfromexhaustgasesbeforefeedingtotheenginewithanappropriatelydesignedshellandtubeheatexchangerwithexhaustbypassarrangement.Further,optimalfuelinlettemperaturewasfoundtobe80 °CconsideringtheBTEandBSEC(brakespecificenergyconsumption).However,combustioncharacteristicsofJatrophaoilhadnotbeenreported.Theignitiondelaywasshorterforneatrapeseedoilanditsblendswithdieselascomparedtothatofstandarddiesel.Peakcylinderpressureandmaximumheatreleaserateweredecreasedwithincreaseinneatrapeseedoilcontentinblends [7].Qietal. [8] reportedsimilarkindofresultsusingSoybeanbiodieselandblendswithdiesel.

Inrecentyears,severalattemptshavebeenmadetousetheestersofnon-edibleoilsassubstitutefordiesel.Hence,itwasdecidedtochooseonesuchnon-edibleoillikeJatrophaforfurtherinvestigationwhichcouldprovideasuitablesubstitutefordieselfuel.

Jatrophaoilcontainshigherpercentageofoleicacid(34.3–45.8)followedbylinoleicacid(29.0–44.2)andpalmiticacid(14.1–15.3).Theaveragesaturatedandunsaturatedfattyacidsconstitute20.1%and79.9%oftheoil,respectively.Thematuritystageofthefruitsatthetimeofcollectionisreportedtoinfluencethefattyacidcompositionoftheoil [9].Becauseofthepresenceofhigherpercentageoffreefattyacids,itisnotdesirabletorunthedieselenginedirectlywithJatrophaoil.Thereforeanattemptwasmadetoutilizetheheatfromexhaustg
