InthenameofdefendingChinesecyberspaceagainst"harmfulinformation,"theBeijingcitygovernmentannouncednewruleslikelytochillaraucousnationalconversationonserviceslikeSinaWeibo,towhichChineseusersarefloodingtosharebrieftextmessages,photosandvideo.Officialswillrequireuserswhopostso-calledmicroblogstoregistertheirrealnameswiththemicrobloggingservices—tobeverifiedbygovernmentauthorities—sweepingawaytheanonymitythathashelpedcloakdissidentsonline.

Thenewrulesalsobanthepostingofstatesecretsandmaterialthatcouldhurtnationalsecurity,aswellaspoststhatspurethnicresentment,discriminationorrallies"thatdisruptsocialorder,"thestate-runXinhuanewsagencysaid.Therulesdidn'tmentionpenalties.
