“Bikeshavealwaysbeenasymbolofenergy-friendlyandpollution-reducingliving,butthisbikeservesadoublefunctionbycleaningtheairasyoucycle,”saysRoosegaarde.BeijingandTianjinarejusttwoof300citiesinChinathatbadlyfailedair-qualitytestsin2015,accordingtoGreenpeace.Morethan1.6millionpeopledieeveryyearinChinafrombreathingpoisonousair,andinDecemberflightsweregroundedandschoolsclosed,as24citiesacrossChinawereputon“redalert”forextremesmog.

Roosegaardehopesthatsmog-freebikeswillbeadoptedbyChina’sincreasinglypopularbike-sharingprogrammes—thereare29intotalacrossthecountry—suchasMobike,Bluegogoandofo.

“Ofcourseonetowerandafewbikeswon’tsolveChina’sairpollutionproblem,butsmog-freebikesareanexcitingideathatwillhopefullystartcommunitiestowardscreatinggreenercities,”saysRoosegaarde.“Ourdesiresarebeingredefined;inthefuture,thebiggestluxurywon’tbeaLouisVuittonbag.Itwillbecleanair.”
