AmyPurdywasanactivesnowboarder,untilshelostbothherlegstobacterialmeningitis（脑脊膜炎）.Shespentthreemonthsinthehospitalfightingforherlife,anddoctorsgaveheralessthantwopercentchanceofsurvival.BecauseofmeningitisAmylostcirculationinbothherlegs,andwhenshecameoutofthehospitalshehadprostheticlegs（义肢）.Whenshelostherlegs,Amyknewshewouldbeactiveagain,butdidn’tknowhoworwhen.Shestruggledtobeactiveonhernewlegs,andalittleovertwoyearsafterheramputation（截肢）sheenteredtheUSASA（UnitedStatesofAmericaSnowboardAssociation）NationalSnowboardingCompetitionandwonmedalsinthreeevents.

Amywasatanadaptivesnowboardworkshopin2002whenshemetDanielGale.Theyimmediatelyformedaconnectionthroughtheirenthusiasmforsnowboarding,music,andart.Amy’sbiggeststrugglehadbeenobtaininginformationonhowtostartsnowboardingagainwithprostheticlegs,andsheandDanielbothsawtheneedtohelpotherslikeAmy.They“wantedtocreatesomething,aplace,aforum,anorganizationthatwouldenableindividualstofindandparticipateintheirenthusiasmswithoutastruggle.AdaptiveActionSportswasborn.”
