Abstract:

Americandream,whichdrivedoftheBritishcolonialdaysintheUnitedStates,developedinthe19thcentury.Itisakindofbeliefthatanyonecanachieveidealsaslongastheystruggleforit.ThispapermainlyanalyzesthecharacteroftheheroClydeforhisAmericandreaminAnAmericanTragedy,thenrevealsamoreprofoundhistoricalbackgroundandpracticalsignificanceofpeople’spursuitofAmericadream.Furthermore,thepaperanalyzestheinspirationgotfromAmericandreamtoChina’sdream,.Atlast,thepaperinterpretstheChina’sdreamandconcernsaboutwhatcanwedoformeetingourtargets.

分析克莱德破灭的美国梦

摘要:

美国梦,起源于美国英属殖民时期,在19世纪得到了发展。

它是一种信念,在美国,只要经过艰苦的奋斗任何人都可以实现自己的理想。

该论文主要通过《美国悲剧》这部小说来分析男主人公克莱德美国梦的产生以及破灭,接着揭示了时代背景以及人物追求梦想的现实意义,分析了美国梦对中国梦的启发。

AnAmericanTragedyisoneoftheauthor’sexcellentclassicsnovels.Itisaclassicofthe20thcenturyAmericannovel.TheodoreDreiserisregardedasoneofthebestAmericanrealisticnovelistsofthefirsthalfcentury.AnAmericanTragedynarratedthatClydewhowasthesonofapoorpriestforchasingmoneybutatlastdegeneratedintoadeliberatemurderer.Itnotonlyrevealedtheseriousconsequencesofinflatedself-interestbutalsoexposedtheAmericanlifestyleaboutthesincorrosiontoxiceffectsofmoneyfirstforhuman.TheU.S.systemwillallgotoseesomeofthecausesoftheindividual,butunabletoproviderealsolutions.SohewasthefirstwriterwhocriticizedthefutilityoftheAmericanDreaminthenovelsodrastically.AfterhimthereweresomeotherfamouswriterswhoalsodepictedthefutilityoftheAmericanDream,amongwhomwereFaulkner,Hemingway,Steinbeck,Bellowetc.AndheshowedanactualAmericansocietywhichwasgovernedbymoney,desireandindividualismtothereaders.(Mao,1998).HehadanenormousinfluenceonAmericanliteratureduringthefirstquarterofthecentury.Ofcourse,AnAmericanTragedyalsohadagreatimpactontheeraandpeople’sthought.ItwasonceconsideredtobethemostinfluentialnovelintheAmericanhistory.Dreisersufferedthepainofpovertyandignorance.Inhischildhood,duringthatbittercareer,theexperiencesareallincludedinAnAmericanTragedyatthebeginningofchapters.Outofhispassions,contradictionsandsufferings,hewrenchedtheartthatwashissalvationfromthehungersanddepressionsthatrackedhim.Itwasnowonderthatheelevatedthecreativeprincipletogodheadandencouragedbyword,exampleandtruthfulexpressioninothers.Thereforehewasthefirstwarriortotastethetomatoinhistimesandalsoheclearedthewayforthesuccessors.

RelatedresearchathomeandabroadontheburstingoftheAmericandream.ThehistoryoftheAmericanDreambeganwiththemayflower300yearsago,whenimmigrantsfromEnglandcametoMarylandonthemayflowertocrosstheAtlanticocean,lookingforapieceofthepuritans.TheAmericanDreamhasstartedquietlylikebudintheUnitedStatestoeverypersonaroundtheworld,aslongasyouworkhardanyonecanrealizehisdream.Edisonrelyonhispersonalinventionandfoundedthegeneralelectriccompany.TheRockefelleroftheoilmadetheMorganbankandinventedtheautoproductionline.Theircommonfeaturesarepovertybutthroughhardworkfinallystartedhisvastbusinessandbecomealegend.

2.2ThefailureofAmericandream

WhatistherealpowerbehindtheAmericandream?

Somehistoriansbelieve,isthethirstforwealthandbenefits.EarlyEuropeanimmigrantsoftheUnitedStatesbelieveintheequalityofpoliticalrightsandreligious.ButthemigrantsdidnotformacommonfeatureoftheAmericanDream,someofthemaretogetridofthepersecutionoftheoldworldandbuildthemountaincityaccordingtotheirowncreedworshipofGod.Somepeopleinordertofindavirgintoachievetheirownpoliticalandeconomicideals;somepeopleinordertofindthelegendarygoldenstatetogetrichorbeengagedinspeculationandextortion.Whilemorepeoplewillbetoilehomeandcraftendlessinordertogetridofpoverty.However,infact,thisclassicAmericandreammodehasalotoffalsityevenduringtheperiodofthefrontier.Theoretically,therewardshouldbecompletelyattributedtohardwork,frugalityandluck.Infact,ifpeoplewanttoberewarded,itoftenreliesoncunningandruthless.BymeansofbrutalandcompletelyvillainactsinAmericancapitalismespeciallytherapiddevelopmentofindustrializationandgraduallyenterthemonopolystageofcapitalism.Ifyoureallywanttobecomewealthyandincreaseyoursocialstatus,thelargeseedcapitalandeconomicisthekeyfactor.

Today,Americanpoliticsarealsoevolvedintothegameofmoney.Gradually,TheAmericandreamwhichwasfullofpositivecoloreverbegantoburstandevengonebad.

2.3TheinfluenceofAmericandreaminsocietyandlife

AmericanDreamisauniqueculturalphenomenoninAmericansocietyandculture.Ontheonehand,theAmericandreampreacheddemocracy,freedom,equalitybeliefs,nationalspirit,andtheideaoftoleranceintheprocessofsocialdevelopmentintheUnitedStates.Itplayedarolewhichcannotbeignored,itmadesomepositiveinfluence,Ontheotherhand,Americandreamshockedsomanyindividuals.

Everyonebelievesthatiftheyworkhard,theycanfinishwhattheywishtodo.SoatthetimeintheUnitedState,everythingisfullofcompetitionevenbattle.GraduallytheAmericandreamfadeintoanegativethought.

3Clyde’sbrokenAmericandream

3.1HispursuitofAmericandream

TheheroClydeinAnAmericanTragedyisatragicoftheculturalcontext.Heisthemainherointhework.Hewasofhumbleoriginandhisfamilywaspoor.Whenhewas12yearold,hewasashamedoftheirownfamilyandbegantoenvyoftherichandbigspenders.Whenhewasyoung,hehasdeterminedthathewouldcatcheveryopportunitytoberichandneverletanychancetogo.(Shen,1999.9)Whenhewas16yearold,hehasbeentheVictoriaJohnsonhotelwaiter.Heearnedmoremoneythanthefamily,butheusedthemoneytodebaucherybutwouldneverdeliveredbreadathomeorworryaboutthemotherandhelphissisterintrouble.Afterthecaraccident,hecametoChicago,hisunclegavehimthechancetochangethefate.WhenhefacedhisbestingratiationthenseekingtheRegalfemaleSangTelaandthepregnantordinaryworkerLuoBeida,whathehasconsideredwashisownmoney,socialstatusandthedreamofabetterfuture.ThefactswashedidhisutmosttogetSangTelaandgetridofLuoBeida.SoagainheusedthephishingscamstomakeLuoBeidadrowninganddeadinordertoachievehisevilattempt.

3.2HisbrokenAmericandream

Butatlast,Clydeeventuallywasarrestedandwasbroughttoelectrocution.HebecamethevictimofspeculationofthetwopartiesandthejudiciaryintheUnitedStateswhichuseitsvigorouslypoliticalcase.Hesometimesreachedhisso-calledideal,butitwasjustaflashinthepanorashortvanityandambitiontomeethimself.Usingthedespicablemeanstoachievethepurpose,anditfinallycanonlybeshatteredandcouldnotlastlong.However,hisshattereddreamistheembodimentofjusticeonearth.Ifsuchadreamcanbelong-lasting,lifewillnotbefair.Thisburstofdreamisalsoatopicprominentandperformance.

4Thereasonsforhisfailure

Obviously,Clyde’ssadexperienceisthetragedyofthesocialsystemandwayoflifeintheUnitedStates.(Wang,2008.3)Clyde,whowasavictimoftheunderclassGreencapitalistsocietyfashionandlifestyleincompletelygangrenousyears,hewasbutalsoacoldandcruelvictimizers.Infactheknewthattheirowndestinycouldonlyrelyonthemselvestochange.Youcouldchangethefateofthehumiliationbymeansofmoneytoenjoytheluxuryandhumandignityandrights.Hebelievedthateverymanforhimselfoutwittingphilosophicalprinciplesandcreedoflife,sotherichandpoorgapofclimbingdistortedhispsychologicalspiritandhumanity
